Apple Player Update Beta Testing

@TheBigChay

As long as you don’t have Profile 5 content, you can pull the trigger now.
You’ll get the HDR layer just as I get now.

Your stuttering is because it’s CPU-based.

I have both TestFlight and public apps installed side-by-side

Appreciate the responses, really hoping the next releases fixes the audio delay on my Sonos system via hdmi earc.

None of the ATV Plex apps support DV. Nor Dolby Atmos (EAC3) for that matter.

The UI of Plex Experience Preview being slow is nothing to do with my network or server.

The current Plex for Apple TV app - stable, beta, and Experimental Player beta - all have a fast, smooth, responsive user interface when navigating around the app. The Experience Preview does not.

I don’t want to de-rail this thread, there are several threads about how the UI on Experience Preview is an issue, to which I have contributed.

I appreciate the work being done by Craig, but like others I remain frustrated - especially when Infuse “just works” and works so so well.

I wonder where we differ then? Plex Experience Preview is certainly not slow here. I do have all Unifi networking and a mix of wired and wireless ATV boxes. All work great. I do have Plex Media Server running in a Proxmox lxc on an SSD.

Edit: The playback experience is so much better that Plex Preview Experience is now my daily driver, and I switch to Infuse when I want DV or Dolby Atmos support.

How big is your library? Just as a quick example of scrolling through my ~1200 movies it starts getting slow to just display thumbnails once I get further down into the list.

Ah fair enough - my library is tiny really - 3k episodes and 120 movies!

There’s a big difference between ignoring something and not acknowledging that something exists. This thread and the beta testing it represents is the acknowledgment.

Says who? There are likely an equal or greater number of folks in this thread interested in supporting DV (profile 5) playback. Or some other configuration (HomePod speakers with spatial audio). This TestFlight is about improving the player.

Folks have been asking for a consistent user interface for years. What they’ve delivered to this point may not be what everyone had hoped for, but that doesn’t change the fact that a uniform UX was desired.

That is literally an indefensible statement. Their sole goal on these forums is to help folks. Like what they say or hate it, but never say that they’re just towing the company line. I’ve seen them working on issues with users at stupid late/early hours of the morning on the East Coast of the US (where they’re located). I know, because I don’t sleep. To suggest that they have any agenda other than helping users get a better Plex experience is, well, something I won’t say in the 2020s.

Nor can you take as the whole truth the multiple posts of certain users who insist that Plex is not doing enough to address the problem.

Look. There’s a big difference between being constructively critical and being antagonistic or belligerent. If some folks can’t figure out that line and get moderated, well, that’s fine. But to suggest incompetence, laziness, or outright disregard of their users by Plex is completely unwarranted. Grow up and learn the art of subtlety.

My Plex Experience app is quite slow too. Loading library items is laggy.

It definitely plays my media better than the Plex Beta app that @Craig_Holliday has been working on. Seems his work is going into the new Plex Experience app, which for playback is great and seems to fix all the stuttering issues and audio issues on my Denon AVR. It only plays back HDR, not yet DV which from what I’m reading is still being worked on.

I can’t even use the Plex Beta app as it crashes on playback every hour or so going back to the home screen. So I’ve resorted to playing my 4k content with the Plex Experience app in the meantime and using the App Store version of Plex for the rest of my library. Infuse for any DV content works well too. A lot to jumble around, so hope work continues on it.

Be nice to use 1 app and get the smooth playback player available in the regular Plex app…

@Craig_Holliday Been about a month since any input. Could you provide something for us? Even if it’s “still working on the next release”. We are all eager to help test and make the Plex app playback work as it should on our beloved Apple TV devices.

Exactly this.
Until Plex plays along nicely with my HomePods I have no interest in if anything else works. There’s no way to see if there is stutter, if files with various codecs will not even play.

Just as important (but less urgent) is Spatial Audio with AirPods.

Until then there’s Infuse, so my world didn’t end.

Sadly I missed the signup for the experience preview and anything more current.

@Craig_Holliday if this beta is not being worked on could you please arrange for us to be able to access plex experience instead?

Seriously? Even post 1 (through 5 edits) reads that playback performance with high bitrate files was the main goal of this this build after years of complaints. This was a move to try using a Metal based player. You can pretend that includes DV 5 support, HomePods, etc, but I see no mention. Your comment only confirms how it has been morphed into an amalgam of other requests. If playback is going to stutter with high bitrate material, what does DV 5 support matter?

Just for context, this thread and beta was announced back when we were battling audio sync and performance issues here.

Obviously, we view this thread through a different lens. Having read every single post in this thread, I know there are different pain points for different people. You can try to pigeon-hole this into a single issue all you want, but it will never be the actual situation.

This beta has attempted to address everything from high bitrate performance to subtitle issues. And everything in between. Yes, your issue is important, but it’s not the only one.

To cut through the BS, if media selection of 5.1 channel audio with 4k video, even with high bit rate it’s a very good chance of perfect play with ATV Experimental Player latest release. At present I can live with that outcome till it is fixed. Ok, use Infuse when requiring HD 7.1 channel material. But please stop these vial attacks on Plex representatives and sympathizers, your anger has been heard load and clear, all you keyboard abusers.

I don’t understand why there is so much focus on DV and DA audio. Video quality should always be prioritized over niche audio formats that don’t have wide adoption. Most users only need high quality smooth video playback with 5.1 DD. At this point I’d be happy with high quality, smooth video playback with 2 channel audio. At least I can actually watch a show or a movie without the picture stuttering all over the place. I just can’t understand at all why this is such a difficult concept to get everyone to buy-in to.

If you wanna watch your stuff on a potato, then I’m pleased for you. Personally I have a DV capable TV and a DA capable soundbar and I want to make use of them.

Also… niche formats??

First, unless you have a 98" TV you will never be able to see the difference between Dolby Vision and HDR 10. Furthermore, the sound quality from a soundbar is extremely inferior to a Dolby Digital surround sound system with at least 5.1 speakers. If you are watching your content on a 50" TV with a soundbar then 1080p with 2.0 stereo is all you need, Anything more will be not be noticeable.

Condescending and incorrect. I had a Denon X3800H before my Q990D. I know what I’m hearing and I know what I’m seeing.

Can we please keep this forum on topic and take the bickering out of it. It’s not helping and i worry they lock the thread or kick people out because we can’t keep it civil.

I always disliked these types of takes. Just because you personally don’t care about something or see a difference doesn’t mean you can speak for everyone for how they want to see their content.

That being said, it’s clear that the core issue of this project still has kinks they need to iron out. And any good developer knows you need to have a solid base before implementing more features on top of it. It’s perfectly valid to criticize the time it’s taking and it’s also completely valid to ask stuff like if DV profile 8/5 would be planned at all in the future. But we’re all kinda losing the plot here
