Apple Player Update Beta Testing

At this point I’d suggest looking to get into the TestFlight for the new experience (if there are any openings) or giving Infuse a try.

I believe this is the new experience TestFlight link for tvOS: Join the Plex: Watch Live TV and Movies beta - TestFlight - Apple

Even though I paid for a lifetime Plex Pass subscription, I’ve been paying for Infuse for over two years due to the fact that I haven’t been able to play any videos on the tvOS Plex Client due to video stuttering. It only costs $1.05 / month so it’s worth it to me.

So your point of view is based on the Old player and not the new Betas. I agree the Infuse yearly subscription is very reasonable if New Experience Testflight is not available.

For anyone else interested, after lots of testing - I’m convinced that what’s described on this Reddit post is exactly what’s happening to me.

I tried Infuse last night, it worked flawlessly and I could finally watch my movies. It just feels weird having to use a third-party app to connect to your Plex library and be able to watch your movies…

I hope this reaches our devs and a solution can be offered. I’d rather pay for Plex Pass than Infuse, since I’ve been a Plex user for over 5 years.

New TV show came out - audio sync issues on Apple TV. I recently picked up a Google TV - zero audio sync issues! Incredible.

That is not “high bitrate” low to mid at best. Your issue is more likely a poorly formed file or encode.

Still no sound on Live TV when using HD Homerun Quattro, it’s worth noting I have tried using XteVe as a bridge between Plex Server running on M4 Mac mini and HD Homerun however this didn’t fix the issue. Any hint on if this is being looked at? I’ve provided logs and heard absolutely nothing! I’ve taken to using Emby if I need to watch live TV on my phone or iPad. However I am checking in regularly to see if the sound issue has been fixed. It’s worth noting that SD channels fail altogether with the error message: “The operation couldn’t be completed. (CoreMediaErrorDomain error 1718449215)” when Allow Direct Stream is enabled however even with it disabled there’s no sound as with HD channels. Enabling / Disabling Allow Direct Play doesn’t seem to have any impact. To be fair, this is a new development as previously these settings had zero impact whatsoever.

I can’t believe this is still a thing years later. You would think at some point Plex would throw as many resources as it take to get this resolved once and for all. I am grateful that someone is working on it but it’s massively disappointing on Plex’s part.

I completely agree. The Apple TV Plex App has been broken for almost 3 years. Plex should be embarrassed by this. I’ve been paying monthly for a third party app just to watch my Plex content on my Apple TV without the picture stuttering every 10 seconds even though I paid for a lifetime plex pass membership. They’ve been allegedly “fixing” this issue for over a year. This thread started in March 2024. For them to not have released a solution yet is an indictment on their development team. Their development team is either lazy, incompetent or both.

I find it more embarrassing that they deployed the new app on iOS when it wasn’t even beta. It’s still broken, still a terrible UI, and they refuse to roll it back to the real app, which on iOS is just giving us the middle finger.

on the new iOS app, does anyone know if they have yet fixed deep linking?

The last post from @hsousa was on March 11th. Since then it has been radio silence. I have some questions that I wish but am not hopeful that I will get responses to:

  1. Is there currently active development happening for a new tvOS Plex App with a new player that plays smoothly without any stuttering?
  2. If so then what is the current status and when can we expect a new version to be released to the Apple TV App Store?

Yes, there is active development on the tvOS New Experience client. It is currently in TestFlight beta. A lot of the bug fixes that have been going into the iOS New Experience client have also made their way into the tvOS New Experience beta.

Thank you @dklein for the update. Much appreciated. Is there an ETA for a production release?

There is no set date that has been given to the Testing Group. To add to dklein mention above, Apple Tv New Experience client is progressing very well and features are returning almost every release.

Please do not wish the current PEP into existence on main it is far from ready…

@SE56 Thanks for the additional update. That sounds good. It would be nice if Plex provided an approximate ETA for the tvOS update. Even if they said Q3 or Q4 then we at least can stop wondering. Even if they provide an ETA and they don’t make it. All I’m looking for is some transparency regarding targeted prod releases.

@alex_murray I also don’t love the New Player Experience on the iPad but it isn’t the worst UI I’ve experienced. With some user customizations it is at least usable. I would welcome the New Experience client on tvOS if the quality of the playback was as good as Infuse.

I’m going to try again. Does anyone know when the updated tvOS app will be released???

Next week on Monday morning, iOS this week. This is a Beta Testing Discussion only

This is the beta release schedule currently. A public release has not been specified yet for the tvOS client.
