Apple Player Update Beta Testing

Is there any target for the public release?

Video player still broken? it been what now? 5 years plus of a broken tvOS player?:rofl:

tbh I gave up, tried countless beta versions up till now and none of them can get simple playback right, went back to infuse.

…but at least they spend a lot of time on gimmick features.

They are still supposedly rolling out tvOS updates but they haven’t bothered to push them to the TestFlight for almost a month. Meanwhile Roku gets updated all the time.

Well maybe a major one will come having pictures & music also in as it’s in Roku now  Therefore it may take longer, who knows.

To be accurate 3 weeks ago was the last tvOS release 2025.23.0 (1215)

Can’t make a competent video player. Doesn’t offer anything streaming the other arent doing for free. New UI over complicates everything. can’t do infosec properly. Can’t do customer support. What’s the point of this app anymore?

Jellyfin and infuse is calling everyone. Both of which actually care for their user base and don’t see their users as a data mining opportunity.

tvOS New Experience Player works for me. Are there issues? Yes, but nothing stopping me enjoying others and my Library Collections.

Cool

Others have issues

Constant subtitles issue, sometimes they work sometimes they switch to another language sometimes they just disappear until re-enabled

Constant stuttering issues with high bitrate files, like sometimes it becomes slow motion until app is restarted.

Issues with the god damned UI, sometimes when I press back it’s fine, sometimes it just minimises whole app, also it’s so super counterintuitive when I swipe to controls it never picks the option I actually want, ever. For example when there is incoming skip intro or end I might want to cancel it, what does the app do ? Highlight subtitles, or pause button, god forbid it would actually do what user wants

Also when browsing home screen why it has to jump now to some library when scrolling down, so distracting it’s crazy, people developing this app 100% don’t use it at all.

Their dev team seems absolutely and stunningly incompetent, at least people managing them and prioritizing stuff for sprints and deciding backlog priority.

I am so done with Plex app.

Cool, so why are you still here..

As for your issues I have not witnessed any of those traits. Mind, I only use English subs for Irish, Welsh, Scot and Forced subs for foreign. Find subs and External subs work a treat. Live tv is mostly fixed except for guide 24Hr+ oddities were at present has not been fixed.

Which ATV are you using?

The latest TestFlight build expires in 62 days, making it 28 days old.

Released on the 19th August AU, that 22 days ago for tvOS, now it the next day so 23 Days

iOS was released on 12th August AU for 29 Days, now the next day so 30 days.

The updates are on a nominated 14 day cycle, Testflight tvOS was not released last week, probably due to a Holiday Weekend in the US.

I could care less about TestFlight releases. As far as I’m concerned, until there is a new tvOS version in production that is available on the App Store then it doesn’t exist to me. They haven’t released a production update since January 28th. That is almost 9 months ago. Meanwhile Roku releases an update almost monthly. You guys can keep playing with your TestFlight builds but they don’t provide any value to anyone until there is a production release.

Ok, you do know Roku are Preview Releases. Different NO

Sad you don’t see value

I don’t understand what you mean by “Preview Release”; however, according to the Roku Store, the Plex App is listed as version 7.36.20, released on 8/28/25, with a note indicating that casting issues have been resolved. This appears to be an official update.

Furthermore, it is sad that the importance of ongoing software support is lost on you, as consistent updates are essential for resolving reported issues and maintaining high standards of quality.

For my Plex viewing, I’ve long-since moved from ATV to nvidia shield. For the most part, the shield has been solid. I’m just following this thread to keep tabs on the situation, and I find it humorous that the Plex team is no further along in getting the ATV player fit for purpose after so many years.

Lots of detailed feedback, passion and hope from beta testers. Lots of silence, inaction and focus on the wrong things from Plex. Oh well, carry-on good beta testers - it’s been great for a laugh!

yes, all of this. The player remains *incredibly buggy, glitchy, and inconsistent.

Subtitles appear in teeny-tiny text if you dare to set a custom subtitle style that’s not a tvOS default - and the teeny-tiny text doesn’t even match the custom style I set anyway!

The remote is inconsistent af. Skip Intro or Skip Credits is a 2-in-10 shot of working.

Skip forward/back 10sec by clicking the edge of the remote STILL doesn’t work.

Tapping or swiping to reveal the controls is a crapshoot on what button it will land on.

Going “back” from screen B to screen A, Plex seems to have short-term memory loss as it will always put the cursor back to the top of the list, even if you scrolled down 16 items. This is particularly annoying when changing playback controls whilst playing - setting an audio language and then going back, takes me to the previous menu with the first item highlighted, not the audio option highlighted.

I do not believe the devs use their own product.

Yeah the fact that Plex hasn’t done any bug updates or fixes to the Apple TV app in that long is really bad. Can’t wait to see if there are any issues related to tvOS 26 when it comes up next week and suddenly Plex has to scramble to fix something because they haven’t don’t jack on the old app for so long.

I’m actually wondering if Plex are holding back with updates purely because of the imminent release of tvOS 26. If the mooted Audio Passthtough actually becomes reality it’s gonna change a lot. That said, if that’s really the case there is no reason why that can’t be communicated to us humble users.

Reading the comments on if the preview player works or not I have been very open and critical (before I gave up caring) on its usability. It’s an unusable hot mess for anyone unfortunate enough to be using HomePodsAirpods as their audio devices.

I recently switched to a Sonos Arc Ultra and pair of 300 surrounds and the usability has become night and day. The preview now plays my 4K profile 8 True-HD Atmos media pretty flawlessly. Yes only HDR when it’s capable of playing as Dolby Vision and obviously missing Atmos for those same files but that aside files do play far better than when the HomePods were my audio source.

The bug still exists with aspect ratios where anything of a lower resolution shows a few pixels in the centre of the screen when aspect ratio is set to original.

Anyways I’m sat waiting to see if things improve in the app if and when Audio Passthrough becomes a thing. If they don’t then I will probably ditch the Apple TV for Plex usage. I really can’t be bothered switching between Infuse for its far better movie playback and then back to Plex for watching shows due to infuse awful UI/UX when watching TV shows.

I recently got a 4K fire stick for usage outside of Plex but despite that I’m now using it for all Dolby Vision/TrueHD Atmos content. But I really want a wired client. So I will sit and wait for a while to see what happens with Audio Passthrough on Apple TV and Plex incorporation of it and if things haven’t changed in a month or two I will probably upgrade the fire stick to a fire TV cube or roll back the years and purchase a Shield. Having heard TrueHD Atmos on my Sonos setup I can’t go back to having my audio transcoded any longer.
