Fantastic work. I might have overlooked, but writeup missing which tvOS version, which Plex app version? It’s not clear to me.
Cause logic?
Thanks.
TVOS : 18.6
Plex App : 8.45 (9684)
since then, have updated to TVOS 26, no change in behaviour.
Thats the release app. What about the beta app, like this thread is for discussing?
I don’t have access to TestFlight build. Would appreciate it if someone can add me.
I truly wish I could offer you exactly that my fellow forum friend
Maybe @Craig_Holliday could help ![]()
I did get the New Experience update on my Roku TV. I agree that the UI isn’t optimal but once you get used to it, it’s fine. The only issue (and I’m sure that this is one of the issues being reported in the Roku forum) is that it take forever to load. When you launch the app you get the rotating circle for about 15 seconds before the home screen loads. After that it seems to work fine. Hopefully they address that before releasing the tvOS version.
Which DNS have you with your Internet connection, hopefully not your default ISP offering.
A month later and no updates. When should we expect an update for tvOS?
Really?? Radio silence? I am absolutely besides myself that there hasn’t been an update to the Plex tvOS app for almost a year. Apple TV is one of the most popular streaming devices and Plex has completely ignored it. I’ve been paying for Infuse for almost three years because Plex is either too lazy or too incompetent to properly maintain their app. I have a lifetime Plex Pass membership and I am unable to take advantage of many of the benefits because the Plex App on tvOS has been broken for over three years.
The worst part is the lack of communication or transparency from Plex regarding current status and expected delivery dates. If a Plex employee simply indicated when they are targeting a tvOS production release then at least we can feel like progress is being made. Instead all we get is hearsay about focusing on “the new experience” and Roku. Speaking of Roku, I got the updated version with the new experience about a month ago and it is a piece of garbage. I can forgive the poor UI but the fact that the app takes 30 seconds just to load the home screen is a complete failure on internal quality control.
If anyone can suggest an alternative to Plex then I’m all ears because I’m done with Plex.
Emby and Jellyfin (I tried both, staying with Plex).
(I have both Roku Ultra and Apple TV and for Plex I use Roku)
The Home Screen loads in under 5 sec for me on my Roku Ultra (same for Apple TV Beta after removed from memory, otherwise instantly).
I would think that you would be happy that the Old Experience is still available on Apple TV
Anyway, Emby or Jellyfin are alternatives to Plex.
Why? Their update won’t have DV prof8 support, it won’t have atmos support, it won’t have hdr10+ support, it won’t decode hdtshdma and truehd losslessly, it won’t have an equivalent of their video engine.
Yea… it’ll work ‘better’, but its not going to replace all of the advanced playback you pay Infuse for.
You can run Jellyfin server with Infuse client as well.
I am good with the old experience UI on the AppleTV however the constant video stuttering that we’ve been dealing with for years is a dealbreaker which is why I continue to use Infuse which offers a superior video playback experience.
I just can’t believe that they haven’t done anything about the video stuttering issue after 3+ years of everyone complaining about it. Since they don’t communicate with their customers we don’t have any idea what is preventing them from fixing it. Is it a lack of revenue? Is it a lack of talent? I guess we’ll never know.
Well the original / old experience app will probably stutter its way to the grave. The new experience app isn’t without it’s flaws, but playback is definitely smoother in general. At least in the betas I’ve used. That said, Infuse is still the undisputed king of playback and after years of use it’s one of the better $99 I’ve spent. My only gripe is that they still ignore supporting transcoded streams as an option for remote playback.
As you are well aware, The New Experience Player for the iOS and ATV are total rewrites and have a fairly constant development of fixes and improvements. I use the apps for everyday use now days and find it more than suitable. Okay, some features are still missing. Stuttering is gone and there are a few open cases of some modern file types that still require development.
So if content is of 2 channel stereo, Mono, 5.1 and 7.1 channel Audio there no issue. No pass thru Atmos, that’s not Plex’s fault.
Version 27 seems to be a very stable build IMHO
If forum readers that can use Testflight releases will know, it is looking very promising going forward. I congratulate Craig and Team for their dedicated work in bringing better apps.
As many have mentioned other competitors apps, I have tried them all mainly due to curiosity, some have advantages but overall are inferior.
My point is don’t sell Plex short at present.
I appreciate the update and I’m very happy to hear that the New Experience Player for ATV has addressed video stuttering.
My only question is, WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED TO PROD???
I’m not looking for a specific date but a ballpark target would be very much appreciated. Are we talking Q1 2026 or more like Q2?
People are frustrated because there is no transparency regarding a roadmap or rollout plan.
I’m in two minds about a push to GA/Prod, especially if Live TV will regress in stability and features in the same way as the iOS client (broken EPG, missing record button in EPG, UX design issue with preview in EPG taking up far too much space & forcing transcode when viewing live tv for example).
My primary use case is Live TV, as I’ve moved watching videos to Infuse until the stuttering is sorted. Taking a step back on Live TV to fix stuttering would be an overall WAF/KAF (wife/kit acceptance factor) killer for me.
Hoping at some point the Appel TV “Plex Experience” testflight might have a purge of inactive users, as quite a few folks are keen to start testing (and have been for quite a while in my case)
DD+/EAC3 also broken for many on the new app. Videos with EAC3 7.1 audio files not playing in new iOS App - #33 by Menel
Rollout now would cause so much chaos.
I apologize if this is a stupid question but are DD+ and EAC3 broken in the current production tvOS version of Plex? Because if they are broken today then I don’t see the problem with releasing without those features.
The current production tvOS plex app is on the legacy 2.45, it plays these DD+/EAC3 tracks just fine.
I’d have so many complaints from friends and family, would be massive clusterF. Already get a lot of poking about things not working on ipads that have been forced onto the new code
