Apple Player Update Beta Testing

We are making a new app with new interface for tvOS, Android TV etc. testflight has limited spots unfortunately.

We are not making new features for existing app.

Unless it has WatchTogether, we don’t want it

It won’t, at least not anytime soon.

Thanks BigWheel - By chance will the new tvOS app be using Apple’s native AVPlayer, or would there be an option to switch to this player within the Plex app config for high bitrate media?

The new experimental handles high bitrate much improved. You wont have issues on that front.

There are other side tech missing you may want, but server can transcode for that like audio

Thanks @BigWheel for the update. I hate to ask again, but is there any roadmap or timetable for a production release?

Not to be a negative Nigel, though I’ll need some fairly serious convincing if there’s still not going to be any support for the native player / hardware.

This seems to be what makes alternative front end apps like Infuse and Vidhub such a great user experience, direct playing and passing through DV and high bitrate content from Plex servers - avoiding unnecessary CPU processing / remote transcoding, and letting the Apple TV native hardware support do the heavy lifting.

I’ve been happy in the Plex ecosystem for many many years, though in the last couple of years it’s been a little disappointing coming across some issues long pending a solution that have necessitated exploring other front and back end options.

Optimistically looking forward to seeing how the next update improves the user experience!

The New Experience app for ATV is now quite mature and plays High bit rate content without issue. As an update True HD will also play 7.1 audio.

A bonus, Subtitles are supported for external and Find with sync, which is a real plus in my book.

So at present ATV app still has some issues but these are becoming smaller yet can be annoying at times. Time will tell if these are resolved prior to release, time frame for release Unknown

High bitrate and even high frame rate runs very well and smooth. Eg

Performance is coming.

Featureset is not.

Right now eac3 crashes playback which is a showstopper

And dv, hdr10+, and atmos passthrough is not gonna happen, as far as we know is not on roadmap. If you want advanced codecs, look to infuse. Plex app is to be a “good enough” app for granny and auntie and as long as you accept that low bar expectation, youll be happy. Its going to be good and have fewer complaints once they get over their eac3 woes and release it.

EAC3 crashes are not an issue with my ATV 4K (2022), I don’t think I have had one in fact. I have a lot of EAC3 audio Titles

What about the UI/UX? The navigation?

Is it like the New Experience apps (Roku, iOS, etc)?

And the issue with the overheating and CPU throttling with the 3rd. gen ATVs?

I am very happy with the UI of the current ATV app.

Great to hear there’s been some progress, thanks for sharing the details - certainly looks promising.

Though if that’s the long term outlook, it sounds like Infuse or Vidhub is the best solution for my use case for the foreseeable future unfortunately. No DV / HDR10+ passthrough is a bit of a must-have for me, particularly knowing the results via Infuse etc (which don’t come with the DV / HDR10+ overheating / stuttering issues Plex does currently).

I’ll be keen to check out the new tvOS Plex app when it’s released regardless.

Navigation is still quirky and still needs some work, yet functional

then please do not release it

It’s very much the new Roku experience but without the pop over functionality (so closer to the early Roku release).

There is an Eac3 7.1 fix in the works, it made it into a Nov beta but didn’t make the iOS public release for some reason.

DV 7 falls back to HDR10, and DV 5 and 8 are functional. Both pass through on transcodes as long as clients support the profiles

TrueHD transcodes to Opus as Plex doesn’t pay for the license.

Any update on when an updated Test Flight version will be released?

Those with the beta: does it not passthrough DV in mp4 or mkv? aka. DV switches TV to DV mode…

DV mp4 should be playable via native AVPlayer and mkv only requires a simple remux on the server.

@BigWheel Not sure if you saw my last post but would very much appreciate it if you could provide a ballpark target delivery date for the tvOS production release. Are we looking at Q1, Q2, Q3 or Q4 2026?

It will be ready when it is ready. I have no ETA.

Will there ever be an update to the Beta?
