I started this thread exactly 150 days ago, and I’m less hopeful in a fix than ever. The lack of engagement from any type of Plex related representative is astonishing. The vast majority of us are even paying customers!
150 days?!? Seems like Plex HQ’s attitude is that if they ignore the issue it will miraculously disappear.
Unfortunately for paying subscribers this isn’t the case.
Disappointing response, or complete lack of response I should say, from Plex. @elan
also having this issue with a non oled samsung TU7100 65" and 2021 4K atv
Adding to this thread. I have the same issue. I see the staff member said it could be a panel problem, and most everyone has OLED with a few exceptions. I have a Hisense H9F LED. Does everyone have their ATV set to Dolby Vision? Could that be the issue?
I converted a clip of Sicario in about 12 different flavors using different tools and even a video copy of the BR and they all have banding. A friend direct played it on the same clips on his Apple TV 4k 2021 and Sony OLED and see’s the same thing.
I set my Apple TVs to SDR with Dynamic Range matching on. I can also see banding on my Epson projector, but it’s not as obvious as on my CX. I don’t think they meant it’s a “panel problem” per se, just that some panels may display the banding more vividly than others.
I’ve got a Sony X900F and am experiencing the same issues. If I play the video direct from a USB key, no issues, but through Plex on the 2021 Apple TV 4K, there are terrible banding issues.
Same here, with Apple TV 4K (newest version) and an LG C8 OLED. Looks fine when playing the file using for example VLC, but banding en masse using the Plex client.
I’ve now also confirmed that using the “Use Old Video Player” setting does resolve the problem. I have no idea what other issues turning this setting on might cause though.
Same issues experienced here. Apple TV 4K (Gen2) + LG C1. Glad stumbled onto this thread. Thought it was a TV issue
I’ve tried various Apple TV (DV, HDR, SDR) and Plex settings with no luck. LG Gradient smoothing seemed to reduce it just a bit but still there. Switching to Plex old player did not work for me as I get a transcoding error and content just didn’t launch.
I do not have this issue using Plex directly from the LG apps.
Is this an Apple TV or plex issue?
it’s 100% a problem with the plex client app. other apps like infuse play the same content on the same hardware just fine.
I also thought it was a TV issue for quite a while since I happened to get a new TV around the same time as the 2021 Apple TV 4K. But the TV looks great everywhere except in plex.
Is everyone with an AppleTV 4K 2021 affected by this issue?
I have the 2017 version, and this thread really makes me want to hold on to it…
my theory is yes, just some TVs/projectors display it more obviously than others.
Looks to be the case.
Anyone notice similar banding issues within the Apple TV prompt screen when switching Apple TV Video formats to DV or HDR? Settings/Video and audio/Format
Yes i agree. This is a very poor attitude from Plex team. I have now switched to Infuse for the player, keeping Plex for the server. Picture and sounds much better !
Hi @Ridley, I know you have been doing some work on the other thread with DV V5 support, thankful for that, would you mind chiming in on this issue as well. Thanks for the support.
Agreed @waltermorel. Just switched over to Infuse as well. Getting used to the interface but no banding issues as others have noted. Thanks.
Same issue here
I just bought the Apple TV and couldn’t believe my eyes… How can this still be a problem?! Please Plex-Team fix this issue, it’s so annoying watching a 4k HDR movie and suddenly the only thing you see is the color banding…
@Ridley Thanks for the update on DV support on ATV! Just curious if you happen to know if there’s any update on this 2021 ATV HDR color banding issue. This would be another great Christmas present
