When playing 4K HDR content, there is poor color banding happening on the Plex player on Apple TV 4K (2021). This color banding does not occur in other Plex apps on different streaming media devices (Plex on Nvidia Shield Pro 2019) or internal TV player (Plex on LG GX). The same HDMI cable is used for the external device when testing. The color banding also does not occur when using Infuse 7 on the same Apple TV 4K (2021). This is leading me to believe there is some bug in the Plex app on Apple TV.
The source file is a remux of Sicario in HDR at the 7:00 mark of the movie.
Also the same 4k content, on the same TV, cable, etc, but playing directly from my PC (Plex HTPC) all good no prob…it must be something related to the Plex tvOS client and the new Apple TV 4K…
I don’t have another Apple TV to compare too so I don’t know it’s just an issue with the newest gen. Hopefully as more receive their new hardware the issue can be reported and fixed.
As far as I can tell, this is not the same issue. The other thread is about wrong colors with dolby vision, this one is a general HDR posterization issue exklusive to the 2021 Apple TV 4K.
I thought I was going crazy. I just got the new 2021 apple tv 4k and all hdr10 content has some color banding. And it happens on skin tone too. My plex app thats installed on my Samsung tv has 0 issues with colorbanding.
Hope this is fixed soon cause color banding kn certain faces and skin tones is annoying. I want to try the infuse player but I dont want to pay to use it :/.
I am also experiencing HDR10 color banding with the new 2021 Apple TV 4K. I noticed it immediately during the Marvel when the background turns red. Plays fine in Infuse on the same Apple TV.
I am also experience some color banding and also some kind of dynamic-tone-mapping like experience with Plex app in new Apple TV 4k 2021 with HDR10 content. There is a clear increase in brightness compared to Infuse running in the same Apple TV or Plex running in Nvidia Shield TV. Something is definitely not right with Plex app for new Apple TV 4k.

Also experiencing same issue with the new Apple TV 4K 2021 with HDR content. Very noticeable color banding when watching 4k HDR content. Issue does not appear to be present when enabling “use old video player”. Also does not appear to be an issue with the Infuse app.

Also, I have confirmed that this is not an issue on my older AppleTV 4K (non-2021 model).
Apple TV 4K 2021 + LG OLED55G1 - same problem: terrible banding and elevated black levels. Using “old video player” is a workaround but not optimal because of it’s other limitations. I’m disappointed with Plex player - first (still unsolved) Dolby Vision playback problem, now even standard HDR is unwatchable. Both types of files are working correctly using Infuse player on the same device.
I wonder if this is a LG OLED only issue? I don’t see this on my ATV4K2 + Sony X900H. Then again I’m brand new to HDR so I am not 100% sure what to look for.
I do have Sicario so I suppose I could compare. brb

Here are two pictures taken while watching the opening scene of Blade Runner 2049 on the new Apple TV 4K 2021 connected to an LG CX 65". This is a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray remux (HEVC Main 10 HDR bt2020).

I’m not sure why this only occurs on the new Apple TV 4K 2021. I have an old AppleTV 4K and it does not have this problem. It seems like Plex is doing some sort of dynamic tone mapping or something as it also seems to change the color balance and raises the blacks significantly. I have found two ways around it:
Enable “old video player” in the Plex settings (this comes with its own problems)
Use the Infuse app until Plex sorts out their 4K HDR issues.
I’m also having the following problems with the Apple TV 4K Plex app, so I’ve pretty much abandoned it and am using Infuse instead. It is a shame since I like the features and layout of the Plex app better. However, there are far too many playback issues that make the Plex app unusable for me at the moment:
Do we know if any devs are aware of this? This seems like a big issue with support for the new Apple TV 4K. Hopefully, it’s something easy to resolve since there are no issues with the old player or the previous Apple TV 4K.
Can a Plex AppleTV dev take a look at this please?
