Something happened in the last couple weeks that broke the ā€œold playerā€ for me when it comes to HDR playback. I know the new player has this color banding issue so I usually use the old player and put up with the stutter issue there. But in the last couple weeks the old player (on both AppleTV and iPad) forces Conversion of HDR content to SDR and that breaks the usefulness of Plex for my AppleTV entirely.

I’m going back to using Plex on my tv’s native app (which has fixed a bug from when I last used it) but man, this is a major platform for Plex and I’m just surprised an issue like this has lasted this long.

I have the same issue with a Sony A80J.

It would be great to get this fixed or at least get a status update from Plex.

Any news regarding this problem ? :frowning:

Same issue still persists. LG C9 with extreme banding on the new player, whereas native app, infuse and nvidia shield have no problems.

4K playback on Plex through Apple TV 4K 2021 is often of unacceptable quality (or doesn’t work).
Seems like this will not be fixed in a timely manner.

I will be using Infuse and paying them for it because their app actually works.

unfortunately I don’t think they care if we have to use infuse. they have no financial incentive to keep us on the native clients.

I can confirm the same HDR banding occurs on the M1 Macbook pro running the iOS iPad App (HDR doesn’t work properly using the Intel-Based Desktop App). I would think this should have been a priority if this was reported almost a year ago. I can’t wait for the Apple Silicon version to come out…

do you also see it in SDR x265 videos? in my experience the common factor is x265, not HDR, it just happens that most x265 videos are HDR.

Nope, as all my files are x265. Banding only occurs with HDR.

Add another one with issues on color banding with Plex app on Apple TV. I don’t have any issues when using Roku Ultra (4800R) or when using Infuse 7 Pro on Apple TV.

My setup is AppleTV 4k → Yamaha RX-V6A → Epson HC3800

So I have the same issue. I can fix it by playing the video in Plex, hitting menu, going back to the video and then pressing left to rewind a bit and then pressing play.

Here’s a video to show what I mean (it’s still processing at the moment but should be full quality soon). Not sure what this means, if it’s Plex or some weird Apple thing.

Settings are 4K SDR, 4:2:0 and match dynamic range and frame rate. Just tested 4:4:4 (which I think changes to 4:2:2 for HDR) and got the same results.

First of all props for a great video explanation.
Did you verify the TV is in HDR mode after cancelling out of the app like that? Sometimes I noticed the ATV has issues re-negotiating HDR format for a media that is currently playing.

Good question because I never checked while doing it.

Tested it again and it shows Cinema (HDR) mode when playing through Plex, hitting menu returns it to Cinema mode, and then going back to it turns Cinema (HDR) mode back on again.

So, for me anyway, it fixes it. And like many, no problems with Infuse.

This worked for me also.

Well if that works then surely this 100% confirms it’s a client bug that can be fixed.

Hi @DaveBinM, can you review the last few posts from @Evil-Disco-Guy and add that info to the issue?
