Apple TV 4K audio sync issues with enhanced player

Made the switch to Emby a few weeks ago, and for personal media it’s better than Plex depending on what you value. Don’t regret it one bit.

Playback and audio codec support? Emby all the way.

Users and login? Emby I find is much better and easier to handle.

Downloads? Maybe Plex wins here but very close.

I prefer the UI of Emby, 100% more customizable than Plex and no audio sync issues on ATV4K.

Neither platform is perfect, but for what matters to me (audio and video playback at a high quality) Emby wins easily right now.

I am still rooting for Plex and hopefully the new changes make them focus more on the personal media side of things. As I’ve said before I will gladly pay for a premium app that supports all codecs and licenses Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos TrueHD.

I prefer the UI of Plex, hands down.

Emby is fugly.

To each his own.

Hi guys, I was banned for one month for being “too combative” in this thread. I do not think my opinions deserved such ban, but I don’t keep grudges and I look forward to continue reading here the absence of new developments, it is frustrating, but it is what it is.

Who’s gives a ■■■■ about UI if the app is broken lol

Why Jellyfin is miles ahead of Plex. It works lol

Well apparently i do have the out of sync, stutter or loss of audio issue
i had been running the plex client for over a year now without any issues
however i do not know if there has been a recent update to the tvos client
the client does work perfectly on the nvidia shield
I tried to fix the audio cut from the apple tv (paired with stereo home pods) by resetting the apple tv, home pods etc. I found if i am using the old media player within the plex client settings, the audio issue does not exist however most of the content is not able to play as a black screen will be present
i do not have any issues with any other app on the apple tv as youtube, netflix, hbo max

i might going to try out infuse however unlike the most people i actually do enjoy the features of plex to explore new content (browse what is trending, trailer before the movie etc…)

i truly hope to get the issue fixed one day :frowning:

Emby has a UI made for personal media and is far from ugly. One big feature I love (that Plex also never gave the option for even though many users requested it for years) is the option to turn off ratings all together. I have no need for IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes reviews and ratings all over my media, so Emby is more in line with that of a personal media server because they allow you to turn all that crap off and customize just about anything from a UI standpoint.

Plus it displays images much sharper than Plex idk why.

In the 2 screenshots above Emby clearly has a better UI to my eyes. And the greatest thing so far is that all the devices I’ve tried it on work without issues. That’s most important which is why this thread is reaching 1,000 replies with no fix lol.

What’s Emby ATV4K client like these days? It used to be considerably behind the curve when I last tried it.

I have a lifetime Emby Premiere so may give it a whirl again.

All, please follow our forum guidelines, and keep the tone civilized, and in respect for each other

Does Emby HDR and Dolby Vision work on the ATV 4K? With MKV or just MP4?

As I said, to each his own.

Features do not equate to polish.

While Emby may have some features Plex doesn’t, Plex also has niceties that Emby lacks.

Emby lacks polish for those that have an eye towards design and good UX.

The Emby Apple TV app is not good. Period.

Enjoyment while using the app is a big factor in why I personally prefer Plex.

Seems the answer is no.

Plex for Apple TV 8.21
PMS for Mac 1.32.4.7195
Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)

We experience these Plex for Apple TV app 8.21 bugs, audio failing completely and the scrub bar UI becoming dysfunctional, with OTA Live TV HD (all 1080i and 720p), rendering PMS effectively again useless. and, perhaps even worse, leaving Plex users without any mitigation options whatsoever—yet again.

(It seems we have experienced audio sync shift with every PMS and Plex player Apple TV and iOS app versions during the last 15 months, so I suspect the AV sync bug(s) reported by others is(were) not introduced by 8.21, but rather are bugs of long-standing.)

Plex does not keep multiple Apple TV and iOS app versions in their respective app stores, so users are screwed when severe bugs like these are released.

These Plex for Apple TV app 8.21 bugs affect watching all OTA current (ie, HD) broadcast content:

  • content during OTA live broadcast TV watching;
  • the playback of previously successfully recorded content (both recently recorded by PMS 1.32 and content recorded many months ago by previous PMS versions); and
  • watching live shows that are scheduled to record while they are being recorded.

All our Library content was recorded by PMS for Mac.

The only content we can now watch are old reruns on or from stations broadcasting SD (ie, 480i)—yet again.

This Plex severe dysfunction began abruptly with the Plex for Apple TV app 8.21 installation:

Plex for Apple TV app 8.21 AGAIN (appears) to Dung; Repeating Problems like 8.6

.

These Plex for Apple TV app 8.21 severe bugs now making Plex again completely useless appear similar to the even more catastrophic bugs introduced last year 22 July 2022 when the Plex for Apple TV app 8.6 was dumped on users—Plex was without any value whatsoever for 32 days!:

Plex Useless; Apple TV 8.6 & 8.7 Player FUBAR—Can't Play TV; iOS Player 8.5 Can't Play Shows Being Recorded:

Plex did absolutely nothing for more than a month. A workaround was finally re-posted by a user—disabling the setting Auto Adjust Quality. I don’t know if the 8.6 (thru at least 8.7) bugs were ever fixed—I have not dared to ever re-enable Auto Adjust Quality.

Apparently, these bugs would also manifest if Use Old Video Player was enabled. I had never enabled Use Old Video Player, so I don’t have any experience thereof:

Live TV does not work with Apple-TV

.

I have only been dealing with Plex’s apparent casual-testing-of-releases for 15 months. Does the term “enhanced player” in this January 2020 topic’s title by any chance refer to more recent Plex for Apple TV app functionality when Use Old Video Player is disabled?

How about moving this bug discussion to reddit to get more attention?

There are numerous discussions there already, that’s how I found out about this thread.

Don’t think they care about that to be honest. Issue is almost 4 years old.

Review bombing on the App Store would probably do better

Glad we got a delay slider, not a solution though. But progress.
Could we have a explanation what the problem is solving this?
Netflix and all big stream apps do not have this issue. Neither does VLC and Infuse.

Any guessed timeline on fixing this or any progress to report?

the “fix” for this is extremely broken…

I’m having an issue now where the audio will cut out and not work unless i restart the stream. This is happening on both Apple TV’s in my house, downgrading to a previous version on TestFlight that doesn’t have this new audio engine fixes it.

You can disable the new audio engine without downgrading.

Oh you can? I didn’t realise, maybe it should be disabled by default for the foreseeable…

Can you please tell me how? Been struggling with my Apple TV 4K 3rd Gen audio cutting out on 4k vids after 1-2 minutes of playback. Driving me nuts! I want to be able to watch stuff normally again. Need a fix!
Also, how do I get on the TestFlight? It says full, and I even filled out some form from a link I found on Reddit but still have not received the email it said I would for AppleTV TestFlight…
