Apple TV 4K audio sync issues with enhanced player

Server Version#: 1.18.4.2171
Player Version#: 2.12 (14020)

I recently purchased an Apple TV 4K. When I forest set it up everything was working fine, then recently the audio fell out of sync. I disabled the enhanced player and that fixed the audio sync problem. After doing some googling I found that this has been an ongoing problem (though I had no problems with the audio sync with the enhanced player on my old Apple TV 4th Gen). This there a fix in the works? The past post I read that pointed out this issue is a year old.

I also have this issue - but for me 4K plays fine…it’s only when 4K is encoded with HDR do I have audio sync issues with the enhanced player. Turn off the enhanced player and audio sync is fixed, however the standard player doesn’t handle HDR well and constantly stalls when starting or multiple issues with skipping/ff/rw. so, honestly, it’s a lose, lose. The 4KHDR stuff plays perfectly fine on my Roku stick. The problem is the Apple TV 4K app.

This has been going on for me ever since the implantation of 4K/HDR support. Like you said, many people have complained about this but nothing ever gets responded to or fixed. Why do we even post in the forums if nothing is resolved, Plex?

It’s all rather disheartening. I’m wondering if maybe I need to either 1) look to ditch the Apple TV for the Shield which I really don’t want to do 2) Ditch the Plex iOS player since Plex doesn’t seem to want to support it and trying Infuse 6, or 3) ditching Plex all together.

I understand and agree that it’s disheartening. As a tech enthusiast, and software developer I can accept the fact that sometimes things are not going to work as they should. But they can always be improved over time!

The enhanced player is an experimental player still in beta (which is why you can only use it with a Plex Pass) so there are bound to be issues with it. I am not dismissing the fact that this issue is over a year old, but merely pointing out that it will get resolved. To the credit of the Plex team, this is a new player (a port of MPV) that they are developing for compatibility across all platforms. That’s a lot!

As for your listed options, I would try Infuse 6 (I use it on my Apple TV 4K) While the Plex iOS/tvOS apps have their issues, Plex as a server platform is still very capable and convenient IMO when paired with a robust player like Infuse.

I bought Infuse 6 Pro instead of the Lifetime Infuse Pro subscription because I still have confidence that Plex will get things figured out (eventually )

So, I’ve actually been using the new version of INFUSE because the plex app is honestly, while polished, a bit half-baked in important areas - weird skip/FF issues, no thumbnails when scrubbing, issues with 4K HDR playback. All of the issues I have with the Plex client on AppleTV 4K are solved on the INFUSE app (I paid for pro) - no issues with any 4K content, FF/skip is super fast and has thumbnails. Much faster playback and navigation overall.

The only drawbacks are - you have to wait about 10 seconds for the app to update the newly added titles upon each launch. the ALL MOVIES or ALL TV SHOWS sections don’t have the alphabet listed, so you can’t easily go to say movies that start with T - you have to scroll to the T’s. That’s it though in regards to negatives. Works just like the plex app, but in my opinion, better.

My biggest fear is that Plex is gonna loose it’s way with all the new features it’s adding with channel and the like. I understand this stuff isn’t simple and yes, I love Plex as a server, but their apps just aren’t that solid.

My son played a video game on steam that’s been stuck in beta so long you’d think they took development advice from Gmail. The game has been suffering from bugs from a few bugs that never seem to go away, but the developers keep adding new features. It seems like Plex is following the same path which honestly is confusing to me. You’d think you’d want to build a rock solid fountain first then add features onto that foundation.

Hi,

Does anyone know of the progress made to try and address the issue with audio-sync using the enhanced video player on the tvOS client please?

I found this thread (Enhanced player: Audio out of sync on Apple TV 4th gen) from over a year ago with Plex saying they were aware of it and I’ve just turned on the Enhanced Video Player to play some content that wouldn’t play properly using the standard player. As soon as I turned it back on the audio is now out of sync (but at least the content plays!).

Cheers,
Guy

What is needed are logs and complete media info (see under XML Information)

For logs:

Make sure debug is ON and verbose is OFF:

(If you get an error when downloading the ATV logs through the web browser, go back to the Plex settings and toggle the download logging setting off and on again).

I gave up, 4k is unplayable for me because of this issue. I ended up using Infuse 6 app on the Apple TV

Hi,

Please find attached the XML info, Server Logs and ATV logs.

Immediately after playing back the file with Experimental Video Player enabled the audio was out of sync with the video.

Best wishes,
Guy

Thanks for this! One last thing and my apologies for not including this originally: can you create a sample of that particular media file?

https://support.plex.tv/articles/201035968-generating-sample-files-from-media/

And then post it here?

Hi there,

Thanks for your help, link to sample file below (too big to upload):

FWIW, I’m still having the same issues with 1080p.

Is Plex actually working on this?

Daniel

It appears not :frowning:

I’m having the same issue. The only time I have a sound issue with Plex is on my Apple TV when I use my Sonos. Plex works fine on any other platform. The Sonos works fine on Netflix and other streaming services on my apple tv. I’m using a lg projector.

Just to clarify – you’re using the Plex app on an Apple TV connected to your LG projector and setting the target audio device as a Sonos speaker?

If that’s the case, you will need to disable the enhanced player since it does not work properly with AirPlay 2.

I have already done that to no avail. I’m using a optical cable to connect to my Sonos Playbar

Still looking for help. I can’t even use my Apple TV with Plex because of this ongoing issue

This issue crops up for me as well, not on 4K. Some videos play fine, others fall out of sync.
