Apple TV 4K audio sync issues with enhanced player

Maybe I did flip those a long time ago and forgot, I’m guessing they sync when you sign in if previously set. I used Apple’s documentation here ( Turn on Match Dynamic Range or Match Frame Rate on your Apple TV - Apple Support ). Of note, most of my 4k HDR media is transcoded via handbrake (but not aggressively, VT CQ 65 H265, audio all passthrough when I can). Kept movies playing all holiday, no issues so far and I did have sync and stuttering before (especially some of Nolan’s movies). Also, only using new engines, Use old Video Player and Audio Engine in Plex are set to Off.

Hmm maybe LTT or another news outlet can cover this issue for visibility. Customers should be aware how a company responds to issues customers are facing so they can make an informed decision between alternative solutions. From this thread and the root cause one regarding thermal throttling (which was just closed, maybe to brush the problem under the rug and hope everyone forgets about it), my perception for Plex’s customer service has taken a very negative stance. Definitely lost my trust. Plex team you all need to do better point blank.

Audio sync is pretty bad on my 3rd gen Apple TV 4K. I’ve tried every combination of settings.

i’m only using plex htpc for format support on newer releases at this point. i stopped using plex on my atv 4k latest gen due to multiple issues. random crashing, no real UI during playback, and this stuttering issue is out of control. seems to be directly related to bitrate or something. most TV shows are fine, but 4k content it’s very noticeable. i’ve used plex for years and this is by far the buggiest client i’ve tried.

they are too busy letting your friends know what you watch, they don’t have time to fix a/v sync issues on a major platform.

i have moved over to “channels dvr” for live tv/my library at this point. plex is not worth it.

not sure why it says i have plex pass, i didn’t keep it for long. thankfully!

I just realized Plex deleted my reply pointing out how they fired the one employee that would consistently take the time to respond here. They’ve prioritized censoring comments and their public relations instead of just fixing this almost 4 year old issue.

This is never going to be fixed, and I highly recommend anyone still dealing with this to download Infuse. Absolutely insane that we’re going into 2024 still dealing with this.

It really is a real shame, Plex on ATV 4K has the fastest, smoothest and most pleasurable experience available today, with an incredible user experience, and I have been able to compare it on numerous devices and platforms. However it is without any doubt also where you get the worst playback experience, at least in direct playback without transcoding.

The playback of HDR and DV content without transcoding is frankly bad and improvable, not only for the lack of fluidity but also for not getting the benefits conferred by these formats.

I have been a Plex user and subscriber almost since its inception, and I will surely continue to be one for many years as I love the user experience they offer, but I must also recognize that it has not met my needs for some time.

I have a whole Apple ecosystem, with numerous devices and I would love to be able to enjoy my entire library of movies and series on Apple TV, but unfortunately it is not possible. Right now I’m using the version of Plex on my Sony Smart TV, but the user experience is quite inferior to what you get on the ATV, with an interface resolution limited to 1080p by Android, and with almost zero fluidity, although I have to admit that the playback is very good, except for not being able to play the dual layer versions of Dolby Vision, the rest of the formats it plays them almost perfectly.

I have tested Plex on Nvidia Shield and Nvidia Shield Pro, the Android interface limited to 1080p I don’t like at all, although the playback is very good. I have also tried the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k and Amazon Fire TV Cube, but with problems in playing content without transcoding, and I have even tried Plex HTPC on Mac mini M1 and M2 Pro, but in the end in none of them I could get the desired result, for one reason or another, in none of them you get to get a full user experience as you get in Apple TV, or you do not get to get a proper playback quality as in the Android version, and always with problems and limitations in playing HDR and DV content, mainly in Dolby Vision.

I am also a subscriber and user of Infuse for many years, since its inception, and unfortunately you also do not get with this excellent application the optimal result derived from an excellent management of your content library and a perfect playback of them, at least from my point of view.

I just bought a Zidoo Z2600, I won’t receive it for a few days, I hope to get the best experience with it. It’s a shame but I see that the Plex problem on the ATV is not going to be solved in the short term, and Plex on my Smart TV doesn’t convince me either, so I have to look for another alternative.

I just wish Infuse could find a way to tap into the movies we have listed in our “Watchlist” and give us some sort of equivalent. I hate not being able to access my watchlist on infuse as that’s my go to for picking a movie. I realize there’s likely no API but that shouldn’t stop them from finding some sort of other workaround to manually retrieve this data however necessary.

Plex Team: any update?

There isn’t.
Plex are actively trying to hire someone with experience of Apple Devices. The vacancy has been open for at least a month already.

To fix this issue and many other issues it will require a switch to Metal API on the player. That in itself is a huge undertaking and will probably require months of work

Until then we are probably stuck with either using the audio offset in the app or using Infuse.

Here’s an interesting and honest read on the state of Apple devices in Plex.

As sambadrome mentions this will definitely be no quick fix.

Yep, I know. I’m in tech so I get how this works. I wanted to bump this thread for visibility.

This is good to know. I totally get it. I’m a senior devops engineer so I get how things work. I’m glad they’re trying to make some progress in the right direction.

All this does is derail topics when he does this. It’s not helpful.

John, you seem to rather use antagonism. That’s one method, but not a solution.

For me, use the Plex Server and use you feet to go to Infuse. Not perfect but a solution.

Guys can we all agree it is now known Plex are not in a position to fix this issue. Personally myself I still use Plex for most 1080p content with my ATV 4K.

For 4K I use a yearly subscription to Infuse. Yes, not perfect but a solution.

If you feel attacking a Plex Member for their knowledge and position is going to expediate a solution is totally misaligned and non acceptable to most Plex Subscribers with any respect.

Can we please move on…

His rants aren’t on topic.

It derails the conversation like it did here and adds literally nothing and then bans users. Me calling that out isn’t an attack. No need to be extra sensitive lol literally no attack though he has come at me personally.

My position throughout this thread that Plex rather mine data then fix core issues and it’s been proven to be right. Chucks rants aren’t on topic and don’t bring anything to the table. It’s fluff.

What’s your solution? Ban users and delete posts. That’s Plex position. Well both be here when this topic hits year 6

Well if that post I linked to was a rant then we clearly have a different definition of the word.

Well it’s a rant Rant Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster and like I said does literally nothing helpful but if you call it out, ban lol

Definitely not a rant, too me it was a man trying to be Forum neutral and offer some sort of professional analysis that correlates Plex and Apple TV current Video handling conundrum

There are only a handful of engineers on the planet with the expertise required to fix these issues.

One of them used to work at Plex and was let go.

Don’t hold your breath.

This.

Off topic rants are now celebrated when this whole situation is a self inflicted conundrum.
