Apple TV 4K audio sync issues with enhanced player

I’ve been following this thread for a looooong time. On a whim, I decided to try some of the Dolby Vision files that were previously stuttering / having sync issues. With my AppleTV set to match content, the plex advanced settings to ā€œuse old player: offā€ and ā€œuse old audio engine: onā€, the files played back as a direct play without stuttering or sync issues for both Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and regular 1080p SDR content.

I haven’t tried restarting plex or my AppleTV yet, but wondering if anyone else has had luck recently. Using the latest AppleTV app and 1.40.0.7775 on the server.

Infuse can do DDP Atmos, which is what all the streaming apps use. It can’t do TrueHD Atmos, which is what you find on blurays.

I have kept this thread open to read mostly while I’m on the toilet but I think the time has come to stop following. Plex on ATV is a bad experience plain and simple. They don’t even have good playback controls, let alone support for advanced formats. I am using PlexHTPC with a different mpv version with some configuration and it works great. I get support for everything A/V I want now. It just sucks I have to change to my computer. It’s already on the same TV but it would be amazing to keep everything media related in ATV.

Non-4K/HDR I still use ATV for Plex or Channels.

Funny to see the ChannelsDVR guy in here. I love Channels and I have a yearly sub, but they have their own set of issues. I applaud them for not targeting as many clients as Plex, but they still have a long way to go before being a serious competitor. Their personal media support leaves a lot to be desired. The OTA is pretty solid but quirky. Still too many sharp edges compared to a sling or whatever.

Give me the personal media features of Plex + the LiveTV/DVR features of Channels and I’d have a perfect app. I think a lot of people are stuck using both at the moment.

EDIT: I don’t have a plex pass but it shows it near my name. I only had one for a couple months and realized I didn’t need it and I don’t like lifetime subscriptions. If you have plex pass and experience the issues like ATV has I surely hope you don’t renew. They can then either fix the issues or start to do stuff like put HDR behind plex pass. That’s when I go old school HTPC.

Oh man, this issue is really driving me mad. 4K HDR high bitrate videos work fine on my LG TV, Android TV, Fire TV stick, even my iPad but… the Apple TV app stutters, drops frames and loses audio sync. Is there a beta testing option for those really keen on a solution?

There is a beta. However…
It’s constantly full.
There’s absolutely nothing going on whatsoever in the beta to address the numerous issues.

Meanwhile Plex are (last time I checked) still trying to hire a playback engineer for Apple devices. That’s been ongoing since the last quarter of last year.

So I’ve been fighting this issue for more than a year it seems like. It seems to not be as much of an issue with MP4 files, but MKVs are a train wreck. I have Apple TV on all our TVs and it drives me insane to see the audio get gradually more and more out of sync until I have to stop playback and start again so I can have a few minutes of tolerable lag.

I’ve tried the new audio offset feature in the new player release, but the problem is the sync is not consistently off. there are times it seems to be only 5-10ms off and then 1,000-2,000ms, then 200ms then back to 10ms.

PLEASE will someone from the Plex team let us know what the status is on this. even if it is ā€œwe aren’t going to fix itā€ or ā€œits in the backlog, but lowest priorityā€ or whatever. just having radio silence is painful.

Good luck with that.

Only a year? It’s been going on for waaaaay longer than that. Feels like more like 3…

I do also have audio sync issues.

For the last 2 films I watched, I had to add 100ms delay on my AVR to get something watchable.

Offering a rental service is nice, but please fix the basics first.

  • I do have match color space / framerate enabled
  • I run an Apple TV 4k gen3
  • Problem is specific to Plex, it works fine with other streaming services (Disney, Netflix, …). It also seems to be specific to some video & audio stream combinaison - because for some content it works fine

The only way i know of to not have all these issues and still utilize my plex server is to use infuse coupled to my plex server in direct mode. As long as plex doesn’t fix this then infuse is really the only way.

Infuse is the way!

However, if you’re using Airpods adjust audio delay to +150ms. Then it’s perfectly synced.

Tv speakers do not need any adjustment.

Use the audio calibration in the ATV settings, that should sync up the AirPods.

Sadly, it doesn’t have an effect…:frowning:

Seems like they’re working on migrating to Metal.

They are working on updating the player engine like the world is trying to solve cancer…. Put your bet in who wins first.

Thanks! Signed up!

In other news for those of us still waiting for our invites… Infuse’s latest update last week added the ability to access our Plex Watchlist which is pretty huge. I didn’t think there was even an API for that but props to them for however they’ve done it, it was one of my biggest downsides to using Infuse.

What’s the latest guys? This stuttering/audio sync issue has been a nightmare for me and I’m sure for many of us. What does Plex need from me to get this problem solved?
