For a while now I’ve thought all my plex movies audio was slightly out of sync. I finally decided to troubleshoot and changed the audio setting on the apple 4k tv to Dolby Digital 5.1 instead of Auto, and the audio was then perfectly in sync.
I’m going from apple 4k tv > Sony STR-DN1080 > LG c1
I’m hoping someone may have an idea or tips of why audio would be out of sync when using the auto PCM audio setting. Is there any way to bitstream audio to receiver or anyone know why changing the settings to Dolby Digital 5.1 would fix an audio sync problem?
Both your AVR and your TV support eARC. If they’re connected with a certified Ultra HDMI cable, the two devices should eliminate audio sync issues. More analysis is warranted, but there’s a giant forum thread here about ATV4K and audio sync issues you might as well be aware.
Currently no fix/workaround for the problem. I’ve a family member w/ an ATV, so hoping this gets resolved at some point.
FYI, eARC not a factor. ATV is connected directly to the Sony, so audio never goes through the TV. eARC would apply if the ATV was connected to the TV or for any TV based apps.
You can also try the Plex app on the LG. I’m not aware of any audio sync problems with it. The Plex LG app is not without its own limitations. Namely, if the media is direct streaming (i.e. audio is transcoding) and subtitles are enabled, then the video will also transcode. This means avoiding subtitles when playing media with TrueHD or DTS audio, since LG supports neither of those audio codecs.
Thanks for the thread link. I did see some suggestions to turn off match frame rate and that does seem to have helped a lot. Not sure if it’s completely resolved or it’s just placebo.
I have an nvidia shield so I may end up switching to that for Plex.
You’ll also pick up TrueHD + Atmos and dts/-HD/:X passthrough with the Shield.
Connect the Shield directly to the Sony. LG blocks dts passthrough for devices attached to HDMI inputs on the TV. See Audio Passthrough section of LG C1 review at rtings.com.
The Shield is not without its own issues. Blu-ray rips from discs with seamless branching may have problems with audio sync and dropout at the branch point. It usually appears on extended cuts of movies. The workaround is to stop / restart playback once past the branch point.
