Apple TV 4k audio out of sync

Server Version#: 1.20.1.3213
Player Version#: 7.5

I just bought an Apple TV 4K to use as Plex Media Player. I have noticed that audio is slightly out of sync in the Plex app.
I don’t see this issue in other apps.

The ATV is connected via ethernet and via HDMI as below:

Apple TV 4K -> Denon AVR-X2000 -> LG 55LB630V

The server is run on Ubuntu on a Dell T320 (on vmWare).

Anybody got any ideas?

Do you have match frame rate enabled?

No, it is off.
Should I enable it?

Yes, please try with it enabled.

Just tried it and it’s the same…

Would we be able to get some logs from the Apple TV and a sample file, please? https://support.plex.tv/articles/212639598-apple-tv-logs/

logging.zip (498.5 KB)

That’s the logs. I’ll try and manage a sample file.

And that’s the sample file.

After watching a bit more, I notice that the audio sync issue gets worse the longer into an episode I get.

If this doesn’t get any better I have to return the Apple TV.

Hmmm, do you see the same issue if you enable the “change audio format” setting on Apple TV?

Yes, it made no difference.

I have the same issue. I notice if I resume playback on anything the delay is worse or if the audio is transcoded the delay is also worse.

I returned the Apple TV and bought an Nvidia Shield TV instead. A much better Player…

I found a workaround. I disabled match frame rate in the Apple TV settings and the audio sync issue was gone. Not really a solution but a workaround until it’s fixed.

Although I see the OP had it disabled and it made no difference. It fixed the issue for me.

Same thing here.
Playing remotely (direct play) on the Apple TV 4K. Audio in all files is out of sync of a fixed amount of time.
Tried to change refresh rate of the Apple TV (60hz or 50hz), but issue still there.
Ah others pointed out, disabling framerate matching fix the sync issue, but image is then stuttering.
As far as I know, Plex is the only app with that problem.
No problem on other devices.

Will try to post some logs in the next few days.

I tried to investigate on the issue and I played with different settings.
One interesting fact is that disabling audio bitstreaming on my LG TV and forcing PCM fixed the issue and audio is finally in sync.
(See Settings > Audio > Advanced > HDMI on LG TVs)
Again, other apps with bitstreaming enabled don’t have the issue.
Hope that helps.
If one Plex Employee really needs logs, I can try to do that.

Edit: I also tried with AirPods connected to the Apple TV, audio is out of sync as well.

Same issue here when playing 4K content back on the Apple TV4K Plex app. If i switch from Plex to Infuse, the issue does not persist. I’ve noticed this issue for what seems to a year now and have even tried using the Test Flight beta builds of Plex (made no real difference). This ultimately led me to purchasing Infuse to playback UHD content.

I can provide logs as needed, just let me know.

I recently purchased an Apple TV 4K alongside a Vizio P Series Quantum 4K TV. It is connected to a Sony AVR, using ARC.

I also quickly ran into this audio sync issue with the Apple TV “match frame rate” option enabled. Disabling match frame rate fixes the sync issue but the judder introduced by the 3:2 pulldown is nauseating.

However, based on this comment above:

One interesting fact is that disabling audio bitstreaming on my LG TV and forcing PCM fixed the issue and audio is finally in sync.

I checked the Audio settings on my TV. The Vizio P series has 3 options for digital audio signal - Auto/PCM/Digital. I had mine set to Digital, which when playing a movie through PLEX, resulted in the output being “bitstream” with a noticeable delay. Setting it to PCM resulted in 2 channels of PCM output which fixed the delay but killed the surround sound. But, setting it to Auto resulted in “Dolby Audio-DD” output which both fixed the delay and maintained proper surround sound.

So anyone stumbling on this in the future with a Vizio TV and similar setup as myself - check your “Audio > Digital Audio Out” setting, and verify it is not set to “Digital”.

Any update from the developers on this? I just bought a new AppleTV 4K and this audio sync is driving me crazy.
