Just a couple of questions to help me with my setup:
Synology 720+, Panasonic JZ2000, ATV 4K
If I play movies via Apple TV, Dolby Atmos / Dolby Vision doesn’t work, this is obviously due to the lack of passthrough, but if I use infuse Atmos / Vision is fine, is there any possibility that on Apple TV in the future you’ll add codecs so it will function more like Infuse as when I use the Plex ATV app Atmos just doesn’t work, but as it does with infuse, the possibility is there, well to a degree?
I do have it running on my Series X and Atmos / Vision work great but occasionally has no sound or playback is choppy, also on the Series X i have issues with atmos clicking on and off quite often, and on the PS5 Atmos doesn’t work, the TV has the Plex app but Panasonic are for some reason still using the Firefox OS which is no longer updated and i’m constantly greeted with something about it being updated soon, but i’m guessing that’s not happening.
In an ideal world, I’d like to run in on apple tv as i do use my ATV the most. I’m tempted to shell out for a lifetime on Infuse too, but if Plex will at some point function like infuse (audio wise), i’ll hang on, as I bought a lifetime Plex Pass because it’s better in most aspects, it’s just a little glitchy, but there are also more versions to focus on so I understand that too, infuse on the other hand is purely ATV.
If it’s not a choice why is there an app for it? I just think if I shell out £100 on an app it should function on at least one of my devices, the series x I imagine is more powerful than the nvidia, it’s also got pass through but it’s still a tad glitchy. The ps5 version is useless, Apple TV is okay it’s just got issues due to a lack of pass through but if I use infuse some atmos stuff will work, anyway, if an app doesn’t function as it should the responsibility should lie with the developers to resolve the issues, it shouldn’t be on the user to buy a device as a work around, if that’s the case then develop for one platform and explain that it won’t work on other devices so that’s a daft argument. I’ve heard the nvidia is thee device for plex and I understand what you’re saying, I just think if I’ve paid for something and I’ve got 6 devices it’s available for surely at least one of the versions should be stable, regardless of how good the nvidia runs it, it should be flawless on all devices.
Despite having an Atmos receiver and a DV capable TV I got tired of it all personally.
Probably an age thing (I’m ancient) but I saw about two movies where DV was actually noticeable over HDR10.
Atmos, well again maybe my ears or room layout/acoustics…but I got little from that either.
What I did get from the Shield was a sense of irritation every time I turned it on.
Even before opening Plex the UI/UX was abysmal.
Once Plex is opened it does get a “little” better. But that goes downhill as soon as the player controls are activated.
I do use Infuse occasionally and absolutely love the Video Preview thumbnails without actually having to hammer the CPU creating them as with Plex.
But mostly I find navigation messy in infuse and the lack of an alphabetical jump list is unforgivable.
But either way, I really like the new UI for the pre-play screens in Plex. for me, they really nailed this down.
Seeing my personal movie ratings alongside the RT/Metacritic ratings is really awesome.
Not as slick as Infuse and the ability to rate within the client and push to Trakt but close enough.
I feel the same about infuse, it’s upsides aren’t enough to sway me over, I really love plex, I just wish it would run on everything the same, the layout on ATV is the best out of all the devices I have it on, but it falls down on the DV/Atmos and that’s where infuse comes in, I think if they could take the elements of infuse which would make it better such as having it’s own codecs it would be a lot better.
The layout is exactly what I want, I can customise my side bar, it works with HD homerun.
I’ve given a few of the other apps a fair chance and plex is the best, well for me at least, I just hope they can get a decent series x version going and iron out the issues with atv.
