today I’m running PMS on my DS215j and using Apple TV 4K to stream to LG 4K HDR PRO screen directly. It was possible to watch a movie in 4K but once I had to wait few minutes and I felt that the NAS is overloaded.
That’s why I’m planning to buy a new NAS from the DS218 series, but which one should I choose: DS218play vs. DS218??? (DS218+ is out of my ‘mental’ budget
As I saw here on the forum all machines are officially supported, I have PlexPass, I’m not afraid to install the server manually, I have enough space/continuous power supply/etc… All I want is to stream 4K on a really smooth way and save as money as possible.
Could you please help me to choose?
Thank you all in advance for your comments,
Patrik
thank you for your comment, but I don’t want to change the Apple TV 4K because I really like it and all our stuff are Apple so the cooperation is perfect.
The system is working, I’m sure, because I’m using it like this now. The question is only if I need the ‘stronger’ NAS or the ‘play’ version could be enough.
I tend to agree with the last point. Use a nuc or pc as the server. It would probably be cheaper.
If you are a fiddler, you could even install xpenology onto the pc, then get plex server for it.
This will give you the synology interface you are used too
I had a nuc sitting around, I tried ubuntu server, Freebsd, & openmedia vault. to see if I could get a plex server running on it. Perhaps due to my limited tech skills, none were very successful.
In the end I got lucky with the xpenology. But finally decided to stop messing around & buy a shield.
thank you for your point of view, and it sounds not so good, because I really don’t want to spend too much money and also too much time for example for PC building and also I like the complexity of a NAS.
I have trust in Apple & Plex, so I hope if there will be a compatible problem, you will be able to solve for us in the ‘low-budget-nas’ region
