My current workaround is using MediaMonkey (free) as a DLNA server with my Sony blu-ray player to stream 5.1 FLAC. The sound quality is noticeably better than either Plex or MrMC with ATV4k. The drawbacks are the spartan interface and lack of gapless but otherwise it works well.
MediaMonkey is the only thing I miss about being in Windows/PC world.
2.11 is here. Nothing on the list.
Maybe for Christmas ???
Even though the fix wasnāt on the list, I had to check. Oh well. This thread has been open 190 days now. That means this bug is over 6 months old. At some point seniority counts for something, right?
Still no 5.1 audio OR high-res music (e.g. FLAC) on Android TV (Shield) either. Itās completely ridiculous.
I have the same problem in my Nexus Player for too many months, if it isnāt solved soon I will start looking for alternatives to Plex.
Still improper multi-channel FLAC playback for AppleTV app. MacOS app can play multi-channel FLAC, but not AppleTV. And neither app has gapless-playback. PLEASE FIX.
So⦠Version 2.12 is available⦠and no fix. This thread is almost 7 months old. The problem is even older. On the positive side, I was showcasing the gapless abilities of JRiver to my friends over the weekend and they were very impressed. With both Dark Side of the Moon and side 2 of Abbey Road, you can not hear the switching of songs when they are connected. Looking forward to hearing how well that works on Plexā¦someday.
Starting to lose hope.
Chiming in to say this has been affecting me for the past half a year as well. Had no idea Plex developers acknowledged the issue months ago which makes it even more confounding that itās not fixed yet.
They are adding all of these new features, from Tidal to a streaming video service and we (hi res multi channel music lovers) just arenāt a priority. Iām not judging, itās just obvious. And although Iāve moved on and use JRiver for my audio streaming, I am determined to keep this thread open until they either fix the problem or change their specs to exclude multi channel music.
Nice to hear that Plex has acknowledged it, understandable that they wonāt estimate a date by which it will be fixed (I, too, spent decades in S/W devel!) but perhaps they could learn to quote priorities.
@DaveBinM: any possibilities of indicating priority?
@bruceagreenberg: Iām very pleased to see you stick to the issue and not Plex-bash. Yes, Plex support can be frustrating at times, but so can all the others and for some of us, Plex is still the #1 choice. This bug has been particularly difficult for you given your large library and your obvious requirement for the optimal sound (my ear is less sensitive so Iām not as affected). In spite of that, you have stuck to the issue (the long time so far to fix a bug they introduced) and avoided any unproductive rants. Very professional of you!
Having said that, you still managed to have a little, harmess fun with side bets and a few jabs at Tidal! Even when things are bad, weāve gotta keep our sense of humour!
I donāt have any updates at this time.
Thanks.
Thereās no point in yelling. It isnāt going to get things fixed any faster. Iāve done my share of software dev and I understand how much can go wrong and how little you can do without a large enough and skilled staff. But, if they werenāt at the top of the heap for media players, all the current bugs would probably kill them. Anyways, I just do a few passive aggressive rants here and there to keep this thread alive.
Itās not that I have a great ear, I just have this large 5.1 collection of music. I love being surrounded by sound.
Iāve noticed on the latest update that Plex is attempting to send FLAC 5.1 audio to the apple TV. It was just sending it as stereo before. My amp says itās PCM audio with the icons to say itās 5 channel but itās unfortunately missing the other two (rear) channels. Progress I guess?
I didnāt notice that. Iāll have to check it out. The output is exactly the same though. I use UKās live album as a test since the lead vocals are all in the center channel. If I donāt hear a voice, it aināt workinā.
Happy New Year to my fellow surround sound lovers and welcome to year two of the long running saga of the broken Apple TV Plex player. Could 2020 be the year 5.1 support returns to amaze and sometimes amuse us, or will 2019 go down in history as the last year that Apple TV users were able to listen to multi-channel audio through Plex? Stay tuned and stay strong!
What we donāt understand is why this feature was working without any issues and an update happened, it broke the player and nobody is willing to admit it and fix it/bring it back the way it was working before. This is very disappointing because I sold my Mac mini to use an Apple TV 4K and now we are screwed. I think the support has never been worst since you changed you switched to another forum system. Maybe I am wrong but this is the feeling I have because we barely see Plex employees answer our bug reports (at this point, after months without answers, they are complaints) or give us a status or simply a place with a listing of known issues. Iām a supporter for over 10 years and I have never been so disappointed by your company. I even offered my help, freely, to translate Plex in French Canada and I never got back an answer. I never complain generally, but this is too much. This is a big let down, after I recommended your system and sold the idea to over 100 of people to invest in the Plex Pass to support you.
Iām not certain but I believe it may have been tied to some other player updates on the Apple TV that Plex made.
Plex has acknowledged the issue so Iām not clear on where this statement is coming from.
Itās on the list to be fixed; there just isnāt a public timeframe that can be shared. This is pretty standard for Plex (re: not sharing timeframes publicly).
