Multichannel Audio (AC3 5.1)

Is that supported?

if Yes, on which connection?

I just tried HDMI to TV, Optical Audio to AV Receiver and it does output 2ch stereo PCM on Optical (can't say on HDMI as my TV doesn't support DD)

Server 0.9.11.1

Quality: 4mb 720p transcoding

XBOX360 black (without kinect) audio set to "Dolby Digital 5.1"

Thanks,

Simon

I have my Xbox 360 going straight to my receiver via HDMI and it receives dolby digital.  At least the receiver shows DD, but it does not seem to be true dolby digital.  When watching movies through plex on the 360 I feel like I only hear audio through the front speakers and I'm not sure if anything is coming out of the center speaker.

Unfortunately, no. This is an issue with the 360, not Plex:

Sorry posted in wrong forum thread :¬(

D'oh, another useless plex client for my needs :-/

Then why does the XBox 360 play DD in 5.1 when playing media via DNLA using the System Video Plyer?

Regards.

Warning, this is a guess, but it could be similar to why the plex app doesn't let third party apps natively play mkv. I'm not saying this is a fact, but it wouldn't be the first time that api's are not open on the xbox consoles to other apps but MS does have access within their own.

Regardless, it's something they are hopefully working to remedy.

It is not supported on Plex for Xbox 360. Limitation with Player used within the app.

Is that 'not' or 'never will be'?

Games are apps - they seem to cope with 5.1 sound without any problem. Time for Plex Inc to come clean with everybody and make a definitive statement on what the final product will be, people can then decide whether to continue to persevere with it or abandon it as a true Plex media client. Because at the moment it isn't. Plex Inc seem to want to dominate the media player market with limited resources, a recipe for failure, others with deeper pockets have trodden this path before and have fallen by the wayside. Just about every client, and in some respects PMS, that Plex Inc is responsible for is beginning to suffer with issues and poorly implemented 'features'. Time to get back to basics and concentrate on fixing Plex's core components - PMS and PHT - once they are stable then move onto the other clients one at a time, you're reputation with your user base is at stake here.

Sorry for the rant, just needed to get this off my chest.

Regards

I'm sorry, but it is 'not' supported for this release of the App. It is possible that this will change in future releases. I will escalade your concern to Dev team.

So does this mean that 5.1 isn't supported at all on the XBOX 360 Plex App?

Is there any documentation on what is supported on the 360 app?  Personally, I don't mind transcoding; so,, if that's an option too then I'm okay with that.

ouch, if we can't get 5.1 out of xbox 360 this would disqualify the player for my needs. Since XBOX games can play 5.1 I was just assuming this would be "standard" for the plex player as well. And I was just about out to redesign my entire infrastructure at home :-(

I too feel as though my surround sound experience isn't what it used to be... My receiver says it's broadcasting 5.1 but it seems to just have dialogue coming out the front right and front left speaker with music coming from everywhere else. I need to do a more scientific test and see if my "feeling" is correct.

FWIW, I'm going optical straight to my receiver and it claims to be receiving and broadcasting full 5.1 (but it does sound a little off to me).

Ouch - that's going to be a deal-breaker for me using the app too I'm afraid.  Couple of quetions:

  • Does the app have to use the native player, or could it bundle the PHT player instead?
  • If it's not possible to bundle the PHT player, then maybe at least have an option to transcode to VC1+WMA lossless audio for those who want surround sound and don't mind having to transcode the video+audio to get it?  Far from ideal as there's at least theoretically a drop in video quality, but probably not too noticeable for 1080p@15Mbps.

Also, probably worth adding this to the FAQ at https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/sections/200642506-FAQ-Plex-for-Xbox-360

I assume this will be added in a future release as the system video player can and does direct play 5.1 audio from my mp4’s. I can confirm the plex app is only playing 2.0 no matter the container or codecs… Probably just early release teething pains.

Hi,

We are using our own custom player derived from SMFPlayer, not using native or Plex home Theater player.

We tried adding a VC1+WMA file to our server, it worked in the 360 app. It is possible that it might be in the future updates for Plex.

Thanks,

Unfortunately, 5.1 isn't supported at all on Plex App for now.

This seems to be the only thing I'm personally missing.... I've been just using the native player if I really want 5.1, would love to be able to use Plex exclusively.

Thanks,

Why on earth are you using a 'custom player', fraught with problems, why not just use the native player - it works!

It's not as simple as 'just using' the native player. They won't have access to the API's that Microsoft use.
