Apple TV app not working correctly? Slow loading

Every since the release of IOS 11, many Apple TV Plex app users have experienced bugs with the Plex client, the most noticeable was the “cast” photos in the movie tile selection, thankfully Plex fixed this problem quickly, But more glitches over the last few months have become problematic to the UX of the ATV Plex app, I’ve been experiencing an issue with the Apple TV Plex client only when accessing movies (TV Shows works fine). When I attempt to access a movie is usually sits at “Loading” indefinitely the first time. If I let it sit there for a while, go back, and then attempt to access the same movie it will then pull up the movie metadata screen and let me play the movie. No delays or issues playing the movie once I get to that page. I do not experience this with any TV show libraries - only movies.

Another glitch with the Plex app, is the “RELOAD” button at the top right hand corner of the “discover” page, movies do not refresh (button is unresponsive)

Also Headline text (.i.e “recently released”) appear BLACK???

Spec details are as follows:

Apple TV 4 - tvOS 11.2.1
Plex Apple TV client - 1.21
Plex Server - 1.10.1.4602 (running on a WD DL4100 NAS - 4 bay 16TB)
All media libraries are contained on the WD NAS
Both the Apple TV and the Plex server are running on wired gigabit network through the ISP router.

No other Plex clients on the network experience this issue (iOS, PS4, Plex Media Player, OpenPHT).

Both movie libraries are configured to use the Plex Movie Scanner and Plex Movie Agent
Cast List Source: the Movie Database
Ratings Source: Rotten Tomatoes
Plot Summary Source: the Movie Database
Country: Ireland
I’ve turned off the extras features

(I’m a Plex Pass subscriber)

I’ve already refreshed all metadata for both movie libraries with no change in performance. The server picks up all metadata just fine - the only issue I’m experiencing is with the Apple TV client.

I hope someone from Plex can help

I am having the exact same issues on a similar set up.

Same issue, it’s making plex so hard and annoying to use! Please fix it

Same issue since update

Same issue…

Same issue, it’s pretty annoying that plex works better with my old Roku3.

Yeap. Same here

I notice on the Apple TV under settings>server I had two instances of my server, one locally detected that was connected and another remote that was trying to connect.

On the server settings I disabled and then enabled local network discovery (under network) and the remote instance was no longer showing up and video starts instantly again

I had similar issues which I think have been resolved in an upgrade; however, this post comes up near the top on search issues so I will post my solution. In the plex app on the apple TV go into settings and scroll down to the “video settings” section. Set “auto adjust quality” to “on” and then I also set the “home streaming rate” to 8Mb/s. “Maximum” was the default. This fixed this issue for me on all my apple TV’s and the various TV’s they’re attached to. I may play with the home streaming rate to see the best I can get on apple TV. Note that I had fewer problems on the appleTV’s that were connected via ethernet then those connected via WiFi. I suspect there is some performance issue with AppleTV’s (4th Gen) on WiFi. Hope this helps!

I encounter the same slow loading of metadata describe in the above post for movies on Apple TV. No issue with Roku or OS X client.

What version is the Plex Media Server and what OS is it installed on?

What version of the Plex app do you have and what version of tvOS?

Is it a local or remote library that has the issue? Is it only the one movie library?

Have tried killing the app and restarting it? Restarting the ATV? Deleting the Plex app from the ATV and reinstalling it?

What version is the Plex Media Server and what OS is it installed on? Version 1.18.4.2171

What version of the Plex app do you have and what version of tvOS? 2.12 and 13.3

Is it a local or remote library that has the issue? Is it only the one movie library? remote library and only one movie library - and one tv and one music

Have tried killing the app and restarting it? Yes Restarting the ATV? Yes Deleting the Plex app from the ATV and reinstalling it? I haven’t tried that one let me try that tonight, thank you for the advice

It sounds like it might be happening with all libraries from a remote server, is that correct?

I deleted and reinstalled but I do experience the same slow loading.
I notice it for movie because director or cast are not showing, those metadata are not there for tvshow. I will try to test the loading for tv and music, thanks for your guidance.
Note that I have not delay for OS X client or in roku, only happening with the Apple TV client.

I found another post with the same issue Movie metadata stuck / long delay at "Loading" and well detailed here Error Loading Movie DATA (landing page) on FIRST entry into movie ever - Works following times

That second link is interesting (the first is over two years old so probably best to ignore it).

I’ll try to get a dev to peek at this… in the meantime, could post both the:

  1. PMS logs
  2. ATV logs

that cover the time that you replicate this issue? And make sure your PMS logs are set to DEBUG and NOT verbose.

I am the poster of the second thread, and can share that last I checked (a couple of weeks ago), it was still happening. Latest versions of everything (as of this posting).

Same behaviour as described in the other post: New added movies (which has already had metadata scraped), go into it for the first time (could be weeks later after being added), the behaviour is seen. Back out, go in, and everything loads.

Try immediately for the next movie meeting above criteria, and the same behaviour is observed again.

Then please:

Done. Please find attached.
I will send you the zip file’s password separately via Private Message

Well, it seems DM is turned off. No worries, the password is xxx
Please let me know once you have retrieved the zip file and I will remove it / remove the password. from this post.

Not overly worried about contents or anything, but still prefer.

PS. I reproduced it across 3 separate movies in the log files.
For the test, I restarted the Plex Server and also rebooted the Apple TV, performed the test, and got the logs.

Ah damn.
I didn’t notice that you were asking for debug logs and not verbose (unlike most other threads).
I’ll re-do and resubmit a second set as well.

Ok, here is the DEBUG level log.
Reproduced from a clean start in the same manner (restart server and apple tv, etc).

Same password as above as well.

If you don’t mind either feel free to edit above post once you’ve got the file to remove the password or just let me know and I will remove it.
