Apple TV, Plex 2.18 (15388)

I just updated to the latest beta and have noticed a totally ridiculous new ‘feature’.
If you look for an episode by date added, which is the most recent version of let’s say a news show, normally you would click on the episode and it would just simply play. Now, when you click on the latest episode to play, you are forced into an “specials” or "Season’ section and then have to choose the episode to play from that season or specials to simply play! What tha? Really? I mean, apart from the fact that the new Plex guide data is missing artwork and the correct episode numbers, being filed into a new folder called (Season 2020)…the match never really works so that where new recordings end up I then have to manually remove episode from the (Season 2020) folder and then manually go to TVDB to match and then move into the correct folders. The DVR functionality and guide interface really needs a rethink. This has really brought to my attention to the fact that the developers really have not really focused on the Apple TV app with a ‘swipe’ and click interface what so ever. More clicks is BAD!

I for one am downgrading to 2.18 (15310), Nope, it’s the same issue. I downgraded further and further…Goodness knows what is going on here. Any clues?

I’m not exactly sure what you’re trying to get to.
When you click on an entry from your tv library, it’ll bring up the respective pre-play screen:

  • if you clicked on a show, it’ll bring your to the overview tab of that page (or whatever tab you had last selected).
  • if you clicked on a season, it’ll bring you to the 1st unplayed episode of that season
  • if you clicked on an episode, it’ll bring you to that episode

The “specials” or “seasons” section is the tabs how you navigate between show/season/episodes (replacing the old layout where you were drilling down through all levels.

If you want to directly play an episode… select it and click the play button on your remote.
The media detail pages have been updated with version 2.17

Not quite sure about the DVR remarks

Thank you Tom,

When I click on an episode to play, sorted via date added, when I click on an episode it now takes me to the overview of the entire show, then I have to select the episode which by the way are all now labelled episode “E0” because of the poor Plex guide data which has been happening for quite some time now. Here you will see what I am talking about.

The first click is from the sidebar which is called “News” then you see the overview of my sort by all, Episodes by date added. Then I click on an episode and it takes me to a second page ‘overview’ and then I have to find the latest episode. I had to change on the server back end to sort episodes by date added to save the time to scroll.

Before, you used to simply click an episode and play!

So this is about the separate news functionality (or are those recorded news segments in a tv show library)?
You should still be able to simply click the play button.
That being said… your detail page for that news channel/show definitely looks odd. I cannot reproduce this on my end (also testing 2.18)… need to ask around

DVR could be way better than it is right now on both the server side and Uno interface.
On the server side, my biggest gripe is there is no way to actually look at all or even organise scheduled recordings. If you have more than 5 or more recordings scheduled like lets say 50…(only because the server does NOT delete old schedules automatically) this quickly builds up to hundreds. We need a proper interface that is simple and easy to use with a column view to select all or click to delete multiple selected scheduled items in lets say a calendar interface or Spreadsheet interface. Scrolling to move priorities etc and clicking on one show at time to delete is pointless and a total waste of time.

On the UNO interface with the guide, let’s say you have 300 channels. You have to scroll endlessly to find a channel. There should be most recent channels or at least the ability to add and select favourite channels. The worst bit is, if you have scrolled all the way half way down, through a long guide, there is no shortcut to go back to the top overview tab. You have to keep swiping and swiping and swiping to get to the top! Maybe a double click of the Apple play/pause or something would help to go “Overview”.

A cool request BTW would be a ‘shake’ of the Apple TV remote to Mute!

thanks for reading Tom,
J

These are full episodes of news shows that I have recorded, not online Plex News or segments.

still not clear to me…
Is this screenshot from an online media source “News” or is that a TV show library to which you recorded or downloaded those news shows?

News episodes created and recorded from local news DVR with HD Homerun. I have created my own category called News for those shows to go into. So yes, these are “TV Shows” by default. The guide does not work so good since Plex dumped Gracenote.

BTW, I’m running Apple tvOS 13.4 (17L256) and also, in the screen shot where you see “overview - specials - specials- specials - Season 2018, Season 2019” there are no folders on my ABC World news tonight with “Specials” Just two folders called Season 2018, Season 2019 and Season 2020 which “2020” is not even listed.None of these recording are “specials” just daily news recordings

How did you name the underlying files inside those folders (in particular the 2020 ones)?

The 2020 folder is automatically created by Plex when it initiates a recording. The DVR is not pulling the correct data from TVDB so Plex creates a Season 2020 folder instead of putting the show in “Season 32” and creates “E0” for all episodes in the 2020 auto created Plex folder. Of note, I’ll use the example of “Inside Edition” When you look under Season 2020 in the Uno interface on Apple TV, you see the same episode number “E0” but you also see in the meta data below an episode the correct date. If you go to a Season like 'Inside Edition - Season 32", which is the correct season that Plex should be pulling from TVDB. You don’t see the date or any info about what the actual show is titled for the day. I have to manually do this. Please check the pics below.

I looked back at all the available builds and I have determined Version 2.16(14822) for tvOS is the last version that allows you to simply click play and then the episode will launch you to that particular episode to play. From then on to 2.17 it moves into the 3 clicks, then select to play.

With note to version 7.1, playback of video is now stuttering randomly when playing back LiveTV whether you are using GPU graphics encoding or just CPU with Unraid and Apple TV.

On top of that, there is this new anomaly that if you start a ‘play live’ when a recording is in progress, if you click back 10 secs or so, the recording live playback will stall. You switch back and start again it does the same thing to the point that when other recordings are happening, they do not complete and fail.

Of note, even though the live stream has stopped, each time I start a new stream, the dashboard will show several recordings sessions with the additional live stream sessions that were killed prior from the Apple TV are still shown as active. I ended up with 4 ‘Live TV- Sessions’ that were actually stalled and not streaming at all while still recording several other programs. I could not stop the live streams as there is no way to to stop them as the Dashboard does not see any live streams in progress despite the ‘hearbeat’ monitor saying otherwise. So rather than rebooting the Plex server (as I did not want to lose jobs in progress) and after many hours ,Plex server gives up and loses all the recordings in the cue to completely fail. This has happened several times in the past few weeks.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a feature where when and if a job fails that is going through Com Skipper, Thumbnails generation etc… to move the ‘failed’ recording to a new folder ’ rather than automatically deleting the file from the ‘grab’ folder?

Guide data…No longer grabbing the correct meta data. Is this because of Covid-19 and a human is not submitting correct meta data anymore? Only some programs come through with the guide correctly. News in particular is missing the correct ‘SE01EP01’ etc.

Hello? Anybody?
