For some time now Plex has had an issue with TV shows in my library. On my Apple TV I can see all my movies and TV shows using the Computers tile. But when using Plex on my Roku things are different. With Plex I still can see all my movies but many of my TV shows are missing seasons. For example I see all 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory using my Apple TV but on Plex I can only see season 1. Any ideas?
There is an app on the Apple TV box called ‘Computers’ that let’s you stream content from your local mac library to the apple tv. The Plex media server accesses this same local library so I don’t know why it doesn’t show me the exact same content.
Ok. Keep in mind this is two totally different systems. The Computer app shows you media added to iTunes (or its successor apps). The Plex app shows items catalogued with Plex. Both systems aren’t just file browsers but use metadata associated with those files in their respective libraries.
iTunes and its successor apps rely on the file names, embedded metadata and manual edits in their app to organize those items
Plex uses your file names to identify movies and will then download related metadata from its online metadata repositories (optionally enriching that with embedded metadata and manual edits you do in the Plex library).
The important difference is that Plex relies on your file naming to identify movies. If the file names are ambiguous, Plex might mix things up, e.g. downloading the wrong metadata, because it thinks your file is a different movie, or my merging items as the same movie.
OK, thanks. Looks like I have some file naming work on my hands. I had thought that the meta data would be enough but it looks like with Plex it’s all in the file name. Thanks everyone.
