Apple TV - tvOS26 Is bringing Passthrough Audio: Will Plex Update?

Feeling realistic here

There’s no passthrough it’s just fake news

r/appletv - What happened to audio passthrough? (comment)

That’s it. No other APIs, no audio passthrough methods, nothing else.

This really has nothing to do with the audio passthrough everyone wants. This is around Dynamic Range Control handling.

I knew this was just smoke. This is the disappointing feature of the Apple TV. Everything else is really good, but when it comes to audio from Plex compared to the Nvidia Shield, there’s a noticeable difference when using a receiver.

If you care that much, get Infuse and you are set. They have the lossless decoding.

Here’s the API for it: AVAudioContentSource.passthrough | Apple Developer Documentation

Not sure what else it would be for.

Jellyfin has a github issue open to track it: Audio passthrough on version 26 of all OSes · Issue #1563 · jellyfin/Swiftfin · GitHub

That’s not an API it’s an enumeration :joy:

Sadly I can confirm that reddit reply is correct, there is no API for passthrough support in tvOS 26. The API that was found is just an enum used to indicate the source for an encoder. Keep your fingers crossed for tvOS 27 I guess!

wow that is rage inducing.

Can you also confirm whether Plex will support the existing Dolby Atmos implementation that other players have long supported or should we just cross our fingers for that also?

The API came out 7 years ago with ios12. And not even the new experience app added it. Read the room.

Infuse has a subscription model that covers the needed licenses for edge enthusiasts that want this.

Thanks for your pointless troll. As indicated in my message I am aware of everything you stated but I hope it made you feel better about yourself :heart_hands: The Plex employee suggested we cross our fingers and hope for Apple to release features and I was just highlighting that we had been doing the same with Plex for some time now with no result.

I don’t think he is trolling, he is just pointing out past experience with a similar issue, which to me it is a valid opinion. At the moment we are in the “The API does not exist” phase, so there is nothing Plex can do.

Be careful, with replies to some members calling out there opinions and be said your drug induced or similar. This post is now becoming off topic.
