Apple TV: Why does some content drop frames. to the point of being unwatchable

I have the Plex player on a Apple TV 4K streaming data via wifi from a Synology NAS. I have a variety of content in 4K. Some plays smoothly, some is unwatchable and I’m trying to figure out why.

I thought it was a player issue and bought a Plex pass then enabled the high performance player.

I thought it might be transcoding the video, all the files are MKVs and the player reports it is direct playing the content.

I thought it might be transcoding the sound. It was as most of it is TrueHD 7.1, but the NAS never goes over 30% whilst transcoding audio and even the smoothly playing content is transcoding.

I thought it might be bit rates, but again I’ve got smoothly playing content with higher bitrates than some of the poorly playing content.

So I’m out of ideas. Anyone got any idea why some content is so bad? Often getting as bad as 1 or 2 frames a second like some low grade anim.

Did you enable Framerate matching in Audio/Video settings of the ATV ?

Yes, Apple TV is set to match frame rates.

With the content that doesn’t play well, it’s doing about 1-10 frames per second play back and appearing to just drop the rest. Yet for every one I’ve got one that plays perfectly from a larger file, or higher bit rate, etc. So I’m stymied as to what could be the issue. Encoding? Everything running direct with no transcoding.

Just tried casting the content directly from my iPad to my Sony TV. Works perfectly and also doesn’t appear to trigger audio transcoding.

Nuts, just noticed that casting to the TV only has stereo sound. So it’s smooth video and stereo sound or unwatchable video and 7.1 sound. Crap.

So the state is:

  • Plex client on Apple TV with enhanced player: Plays most 4K content smoothly with a few exceptions that drop so many frames they’re unwatchable. No obvious reason as there are files that play smoothly with higher bit rates, file size, same transcoding of audio, etc. Video is direct play, audio is transcoded when it’s TrueHD.
  • Use Plex on iPad to cast (via AirPlay2) to TV. All video is smooth, however whilst whilst Plex on iPad is sending TrueHD audio, only stereo is arriving at receiver.
  • Using TV to play content via DLNA browsing of Plex with DLNA enabled. Uh, works perfectly for all content. Only thing is DLNA browser is really ugly compared to using a Plex client.

Sounds like a similar issue to this… Playback random frame stutter caused by dropped frames

Seems to be coming more a wide spread issue.
