AppleTV 4K internally transcodes 4K HDR down to 1080P SDR!?!?

My good 65 4k HDR TV died, PSU or backlight :frowning: In these uncertain times, Im not coughing up for new tv, got a hand me down from dads garage, an old 50in 1080p vizio. Which is actually great, CEC commands work through receiver, its bright… I digress.

Doing some organization and got a hair to test transcode prowess of my plex server… AppleTV set to run 1080p sdr that tv supports…
Fired up a 4k SDR file… DirectPlay… what?!
Fired up a 4k HDR file… directplay… WHA WHAT?! And colors look ok, normal.

Little black box does realtime transcode of 4k hevc10bit locally and tone-mapping in realtime? I feel like im looking at it happen but missing something.

Just out of curiosity, are you using the enhanced player from Plex or the native Apple TV video player?
