I’m on the latest public version of Plex server and I’m wondering why Plex on my A9G Sony TV looks surprisingly good while Plex on my Apple TV 4K or PS4 Pro looks so much worse. The files are from DVD rips so it’s very noticeable. It’s like the TV is doing a fantastic job of upscaling while the Apple TV and PS4 Pro aren’t doing any upscaling at all. For example, thin lines along a jacket will look smooth using the TV’s Plex but the Apple TV and PS4 show large rectangles as if the pixels are enlarged. Hair looks blocky. Why would playing the exact same file look so much better when using the Android TV Plex player than it does playing it from the Apple TV or PS4? There is no encoding, all devices are using direct play although I tried turning it off but it looks the same. Is the TV doing the upscaling when using the Android TV Plex app but not with the Apple TV or Playstation? Is there any way to get the TV to do the upscaling? It’s really more convenient to use Plex from the Apple TV but the difference in quality makes it a no go for now because it looks so much worse.
I’ll also add that playing the same video file using the TV’s media player from a USB thumbdrive looks great. It’s Plex that has the problem.
