If you want to use PlexConnect on an Apple TV or any TV set-top box, I wouldn't recommend using a NAS; this is what I got and I don't find it particularly appropriate for a set-top box like an Apple TV or Roku:
- 1080p transcoding is hardly supported for smooth playback and it gets even worse if you are using subtitles
God knows I want to simplify my installation with such a set-top box instead of a Mac Mini but this is yet the best player although they are some very good feedbacks from the recent Popcorn Hour Plex client.
Short answer, I would recommand to still make you PMS runs on your Mac Mini to ensure smooth playback in every single scenarios you may encounter by investing either in:
- A low-end NAS for you to store your data, you to keep you Mac Mini, buy a USB rack/hub that you attach through network or USB if you want it to be available independantly from you Mac Mini
- A Rack/HUB usb that would be much cheaper than a NAS that you attach to your Mac Mini

build your own synology :D , look for xpenology on google . I made my own using old parts (i7 920 and an asus p6x48d premium, Works like a charm, transcodes several 1080p streams without a hitch) made it on the real cheap.
I didn't say it was impossible, I said "hardly supported" and I mean for most affordable NAS. They do are some NAS but for his configuration, he would have to spend $1000 for the NAS and HDD. People are not all willing to spend that much. My recommendation or agchenry go that way.
Now, if he has the money or either is willing to spend that much, he should do it although, I would rather go with agchenry solution if he doesn't want an appliance and can put its home-made NAS somewhere he will hardly notice it in terms of noise.

Thank you! This is brilliant stuff! So easy to set up and gets around the issue of not enough grunt for transcoding...so so happy...thanks...
