AppleTV Crashing

I really love having PlexConnect to use on my un-jailbroken AppleTV 2 with Plex Media Server. Mostly it works flawlessly. One issue I’ve noticed is with 1080p movies. Several times during the movie the AppleTV will crash and restart. I will see the spinning wheel on the screen, and then I will be back at the home screen. It seems to happen more often towards the end of a movie, though it can happen anytime. I haven’t noticed this issue with 720p content.

I am running Plex Media Server 0.9.8.0 on Mac OS 10.8.4. I’m using the Plex connect build downloaded on 6/20. My AppleTV is running 5.3, although I have had the same issue on 5.2.

Thanks in advance for any light anone can shed on this!

Sounds like your ATV might be faulty - if playing content can crash the device it is definitely sick.

Could you provide:

  1. media info on one of the problem files (see the how to report a problem in the sticky for how to get this)
  2. what settings you have set in the UI on the ATV2 in PlexConnect?

I saw the same thing with PMS 0.9.8. Try reverting to 0.9.7.x

0.9.8.1 is also out with some bug fixes :)

Doesn’t atv2 only play 720p ? I’m really no expert just a thought.

I am having the same issue on my atv2.

The A4 chipset in the atv2 just can't handle the file you're trying to play, resulting in the atv2 rebooting.

This issue also occurs when airplaying high bitrate 1080p media from my iPhone5 (A6 chip) to my atv2. Lower bitrate 1080p media will work just fine.

I bought an atv3 which does not have these problems.

That is why i asked for the media info - if it is because of that you can change the trascoding settings in the UI of PlexConnect to kick in at a lower level.

It would be helpful to have the information though as it would allow the tweaking of the files on the PMS that determines whether to transcode on the ATV2 or ATV3 or not.

Your ATVs are OK and can play 1080p just fine. Use older PMS or remux MKV to MP4 and play will be fine again.

Thanks for all the replies. The media info for one of the files is at http://pastebin.com/ndyqgerp. In the Settings of the ATV, "Force Direct Play" and "Force Transcode" are both set to false. I have seen the crashes with "Transcoder Quality" set to both "1080p 20Mbps" and "1080p 40Mbps". I haven't really done much testing at "1080p 12Mbps" and below.

I will try updating to 0.9.8.1 and see if that improves things.

What happens if you remux that file to MP4 with aac or ac3 audio?

My server crashes all the time. I can’t even watch a movie on the computer without restarting it. I have latest version of server for OS X. A brand new iMac, 2 atv4, 3 atv2, iPhones, iPad, all the same crap

Your OS X sever is crashing or PMS is crashing?
