Just installed 0.9.9.9.

My CC is still buffering every 5 seconds. Changing the settings in my iphone/ipad app dont seem to impact the stream to the CC.

Disabeling Direct Stream will still start the transcoder.

Justed checked out my server log. The transconding seems to change from speed=1.0 to speed=0.8 and back again.

Why is the transcoder still starting if i disable Direct Stream in the app?

With Direct Stream off, just transcoding is done (more expensive to CPU).

That 1.0 to 0.8 speed means your CPU can't keep up. Disabling Direct Stream is the last think you want to do.

Guess my DS412+ just is not fast enough to transcode for the chromecast.

Correct, but it may be able to remux. Raise the quality up all the way and enable Direct Stream and see if it works :)

Already tried this but no dice. Will try again, i may have missed something.

To be clear, u enabled Direct stream on advanced options on the ipad. Then put the video (local wifi) to the max (unlimited) setting.

I will do this again and see what the effects on the NAS are.

After testing with directstream and directplay and some quality settings i found a sweet spot it seems (at least for me).

I left direct play and direct stream on and then put it local wifi on 2mbit. At that point the transcoder only uses about 85% CPU. All other settings puch the CPU to 100%.

Hoped there would be a way to test it without transcoding.

I personal use AES encryption over WPA2 security and all 4 of my Chromecasts work fine all over my house (router is in the downstairs family room, CC next to it, another in the adjacent garage, another in a bedroom directly above, and the last in a bedroom on the second floor on the other side of the house), but at least one user has indicated that stuttering has been remedied by turning off AES encryption. Turn security completely off first and see how it goes, then try to enable TKIP encryption"

I was having severe stuttering issues (1.2gb mkv h.264) casting from my Nexus 4. Eventually I found this article, changed my stream to 8mbit, casted from my plex server via browser and it just worked. A few days later I tried watching another similar file and the stuttering was back no matter what I did. I tried changing my Airport Extreme base station from WPA2 to WPA/WPA2 Personal (assuming that turns off AES) and it made my issue better for the first 15 seconds--then I got stuttering again. I've got an overlocked i7 with 16gb of DDR3 so processing/transcoding shouldn't be an issue--I have it set to 'Make my CPU hurt'.  Meanwhile, lower quality files play with no issues. I have logs of course--can anyone give me a hand?

edit: After playing a lower quality file from the web browser on my server, then playing the mkv again from the browser as well, i had no stuttering issues. What gives?

edit2: just tried using my nexus4 to play the mkv. no issues now. i guess it plays smoothly when it wants to. how can this issue further be assessed so i dont end up with on and off problems when I need to use it?

edit3: found out my router isnt compatible with chromecast. my router isnt mentioned. ill have an ASUS AC68U friday.

Can anybody confirm if their Chromecast is appearing/disappearing from the list of available devices when they press the ‘cast’ button in the Plex app?


This seems to be what’s causing my stuttering, its like the Chromecast keeps losing WiFi connection to my device.

I moved the Chromecast closer to the router and it seems to be working correctly again, I’m not sure if either a router update or the last Chromecast update caused the signal issues. Its still stuttering a bit on 1080 content.

Its definitely WiFi related, on 40Mhz I have loads of playback issues, if I switch back to 20Mhz its much better but still stutters on some parts of 1080 movies.

I am just starting out with testing my Chromecast. However, I seem to have made out a clear problem:

When playing a huge .mkv file with h264 codec on my iPad, Plex does as it's told and uses Direct Streaming which causes only about 50-60% of CPU workload.

If I try to play the exact same file on my Chromecast, Plex Server starts transcoding the file and uses all of the 200% CPU and the video starts stuttering.

Is this know? Any setting I can change to improve things?

I am running Plex 0.9.9.10 on a HP N40L running FreeNAS. The video settings on my iPad have Direct Streaming turned on and Local Wifi quality is at 1920x1080, 10 Mbps.

I had issues with stuttering as well, because both video and audio were transcoded. The following profile seems to have fixed the video transcoding of mkv files and is only doing audio transcodes, which my NAS is happy to do:

I am having similar issues for a while now. As soon as the chromecast feature was released for everyone I started using plex for the first time and I had no playback issues with chromecast! I have tried all solutions provided by "Dancher Boi" (thanks for the work btw  :) )

I know it's quite long, but I tried to include everything, from the session start until the end. During this session, the video file stuttered 2 times.

Is this still being looked into?  :mellow:

The problem persists. E.g. Some of the same series episodes work perfectly without skipping once, then all of the sudden it starts stuttering. Some of the movies in my collection work fantastic, others I can't even watch the first 5 minutes without stutter.  :(

hi

I have stuttering of the plex on chromecast the whole time. even when i lower the resolution and bitrate down as hell.

i can watch a movie, when i runn it in chrome as and mirror the tab to the chromecast. this is working without any issues. 

i have a i7 CPU to transcode and no issues, when i watch all movies in different Quality settings in the browser. but when i run the movie from the browser to the chromecast (not mirroing the tab) it is stuttering every few seconds

I got an AC68U recently. Everything worked great immediately from the get go. Casting to my chromecast and any devices was perfect. 

 

However now I can't stream to any device above 768kpbs without stuttering or above 2mpbs without total eventual stoppage. Streaming to a laptop works perfectly. Streaming to android devices and chromecast is stuttering or slow. Also, some lower quality transcodes work fine, while high quality direct plays stutter like crazy, or the audio is fine but the video cant keep up.

 

Does anyone know what I could do or have any suggestions? I've tried streaming to my TV from my android phone and directly from my computer (OSX) with the same results. I'm trying to avoid using third party firmware if possible.

 

edit: turning off direct play has so far fixed the issue with my nexus 7. however my phone, a nexus 4, cannot play the 720p mp4 at 2mbps regardless of direct play.

Success!

I had the same problem as almost everyone else. My Plex server would stream to phones and tablets smooth(without having to change any default settings), but it would stutter when streaming to my Chromecast. All my videos are Go Pro's native MP4 H264 AAC. Most are recorded at 1080p/30fps, however, a some are recorded at 2.7K/24fps, and others are recorded at 1080p/60fps. I don't think my computer's ability to transcode was the issue, because between the three different resolution/fps types, the symptoms were exactly the same: Every 5 - 15 seconds, the video would stutter for about a second or a little less. If it was transcoding, I would expect the performance to be different between the resolution/fps types.

I tried everything in the thread, except turning off WiFi AES, no love. Finally, I tried what Plex Member Stibl suggested, disabling Windows Media Defender. Voila, all my issues with 1080p/30fps and 2.7K/30fps on my Chromecast have gone away. Instead of leaving Windows Defender off, I exempted MP4s from being scanned by going under Start > Control Panel > Windows Defender > Options > Tools > Excluded File Types and adding *.MP4.

It should be noted that my videos sit on a Buffalo NAS and my Plex Server pulls the videos off to stream for clients. I guess when my phone(or tablet) asked my Plex Server to pull a video from the NAS for streaming, Windows Defender thought it was suspicious and was scanning it or something. My NAS and Plex Server are wired and my Chromecast is 802.11n 2.4Ghz sitting in the same room as a WiFi AP that's wired in. My specs are: Win7 64bit, Intel i5 2500K 3.6GHz, 8GB Ram. My onboard HDs are two SSDs in RAID 0, so I guess if Plex need to read/write to the local drive, no latency there.

Success - bigger transcoding folder

I've had the problem where the video would always stop around 20 minutes or so. I thought that was such an odd amount and was very repeatable.My plexmediaserver is installed in a VM and as it only does that, it doesn't need much space. (content ist stored elsewhere) I then had the idea that it might be buffering / caching something localy. I gave the VM a new disk for the transcoding folder and everything is working fine so far.

I used to have major stuttering issues when playing 720p or higher mkv files stored on my Synology NAS, but when I tried again yesterday they played just fine and the CPU stayed below 50% on the NAS because the video stream didn't seem to need transcoding anymore. I don't know what's changed, if it's Plex, Chromecast or the Synology operating system, but for those of you that used to have stuttering issues because of transcoding on a NAS I suggest you give it another try.

Update:

After clearing all the data from the app I realised that there are one setting I needed to change from what's default to have Chromecast streaming working. Change "quality over local network" to "Maximum".

Plex is working brilliantly for me. I used it over in Belgium on a wifi network so whilst I was in my hotel in Bruge I could access all my music. FLAC streaming is excellent and something I've wanted for a long time. Chromecast is a new technology as well for the consumer so expect early versions to be primitive and buggy. Google may do a Sony and issue slow updates every so often with patches. They may release Chromecast 2.0. later on with more capability. I am so far really happy with this device and let's remember the purpose is simple. Seriously excited for developments coming from both Google and Plex soon. I remember dial up mp3s!!!
