You are awesome! Thanks for the great info. So if I have a bunch of mkv in my mac mini 2.5 ghz 2012. Should I convert them to mp4 to make things easier?
That's really a personal decision based on your situation. I am torn between the two ideas. For one, my Linux server is not that powerful and can't transcode more than one video at a time without stuttering. If all my vids were mp4s, then it wouldn't matter. But the other side of me says, it's Plex's transcoder that makes it such a great server. It shouldn't matter what format my media is in because Plex can convert it for me on the fly. So for now, I haven't converted my collection, but will be upgrading my server within the month.
When you upgrade to a new a server, will you be converting over to mp4
Definitely not. Then it would be able to handle the transcoding of multiple streams. If I wasn't going to upgrade, I am not sure if I would convert or not. It definitely seems attractive to be able to direct stream all of my content to my Chromecast, but again defeating the ease of use and simplicity of Plex.
How about YIFY movies, are they working properly? I mean without lagging, slowing or freezing picture? Can somebody try and tell me, I have a problem only with his movie uploads.
I think I am having a strange problem with my chrome cast upstairs. My chrome cast downstairs that is about 3 feet from my airport extreme. My upstairs chromecast will buffer movies that my downstairs will play smooth. Does this sound like a signal weakness problem??

With the modified Chromecast profile I did not have any problem with YIFY movies, as long as you do not use subtitles they won't be transcoded.
Dear all,
I'm using Plex for two weeks now. It is has been running fine untill yesteray. After half an hour the movie/serie stops. I'm using a Chromecast in combinatin with Plex for Android and of course the Plex Mediaserver. I can see my computer has been busy transcoding the videofiles.
Windows 7 Ultimate
Processor i72600k
16gb memory
Latest software on tablet and pc
Actions taken:
Rebooted chromecast
Transcoding to automatic on mediaserver
Restarted pc and tablet
Chromecast tells me that the wireless connection is fine...
The strange thing is, it has worked fine for quite a while....
Can someone please help me out?

I did some further research today.
I connected my laptop via RDP to my main pc where Plex Mediaserver is running and opened my taskmanager and had a look what the transcoder did to my CPU while watching a movie. I did not find any problems. Spikes to about 80%
In my log the transcoding speed is avr. around 4.0
There is a firewall exclusion in de windows Firewall for Plex.
I think the connection between the Anroid Application and server is I the reason why the movie stops once in a while. Why? When I'm browsing through my library I very often get the message that it can't connect to the
server. The movie is not stuttering but it's freezing.
I only stream in my own private network.
Feel free to move my topic.
My conclusion: The connection gets lost once in a while...
I put debugging mode on.

Is this of any use?
What kind of transcoding settings are you using and what’s the bitrate of the file (rainman) that you are playing? Because I’m guessing that your wifi can’t handle the throughput. Try lowering to around 8-10mbps or even lower, or direct stream some old low bitrate .avi file if you have one on hand.

I'm streaming local 720 3mbs set on my tablet, automaticly transcoded. The file is 10gb and audio is 1.5mb/s.... I'm streaming SuperHD from netflix without any problems? I have more information from the log if needed? Any suggestions?
Hmm that’s odd then. Do you have access to your routers gui so you can see what the bandwidth looks like, and look at plex in your browser while casting from your tablet under now playing (top right corner). You can hover the mouse over the file currently being streamed and then press the exclamationpoint and look if the video is being transcoded or direct playing.
If the video is in a supported format it might direct stream if you haven’t turned that off in your settings I think…
Rate (Mbps) Signal (%)
Chromecast:
192.168.0.183 802.11n (2.4GHz) 39 80
Android:
192.168.0.180 802.11n (2.4GHz) 65 70
That was not quite what I was asking, sorry. Should have been more specific. It might be called something like traffic moniter or something like that in your router.
I'm downloading a WiFi analyzer right now.... My router doesn't support something like a traffic monitor :(
Does the attachement give enough information? It sais about 0.5 of my 1gb connection what will be 5mb/s.... So my router can handle it...
And this one is the processorusage, so it i is transcoding....

This weekend I bought the Plex app for Android (and installed in my tablet and phone).
I also have the Plex Media Server installed on my laptop (connected to 2 external HD with all the content).
After half an hour of watching a video without cuts nor stuttering nor freezing, suddenly image (and sound) freezed for 6-7 seconds. A minute later again. And again.
First I thought about the screen saver or energy saving options.
Then I turned the antivirus off for 30 minutes, and the video run again smooth..... My antivirus is Avast. Maybe that helps you.
In the task manager, plexnewtranscoder.exe was 60-99% all the time up and down, and antivirus was not consuming cpu. Nontheless turning it off did help...... or maybe it was a coincidence.
