Chromecast broken (not the March 2025 Google issue)

Using the 2nd and 3rd gen Chromecasts. They were working last week. This week, they will not cast content from Plex.

  1. Open Plex. The new app loads.
  2. Click the Cast icon, and choose one of the devices.
  3. Plex acts like it’s connected. On the TV, the Plex logo is all that appears.
  4. Select media from my local library. The app believes it’s casting, but playtime stays at 00:00, and only the Plex logo appears on the TV.

On the previous versions of the app, the Plex logo would at least go into a slideshow of media, or info about the currently-selected episode/movie. It currently does not.

Plex Media Server is hosted via Docker on Debian 12 on the same LAN as the Chromecasts. I have rebooted the server and the Chromecasts, no change. Casting still works with Netflix and YouTube. Using Android (Samsung S20 FE) to control Plex.

I have also attempted to update the Plex container to the latest, and verified that Remote Access is working. No change. I have also tried restarting the server as well as my phone, with no change.

Unfortunately, the same thing just happened to me. My use of Plex completely depends on the use of Chromecast. I did everything possible on the server and iOS side. I reinstalled the app, revoked Plex’s permission on the local network and granted it again, updated the server, tried from 3 other iOS devices on my local network and nothing. Applications like Netflix, YouTube, HBO and all the others see Chromecast normally. In my case, I click on the cast icon and nothing happens, no screen opens to connect to Chromecast.

Tried the documented instructions, and I can’t get passed step 2.

As per the “solution” offered above to check for PiHole blocking DNS queries… My phone, Plex Media Server, and Chromecast use the default DNS settings for my ISP.

So the fun part, I tried using the Plex web app, and it can cast content, just not from my server or connected servers - only Plex content.

I have the same issue from my Android Tablet that auto updated. Luckily I have a phone that hasnt updated that still works.

I have the same issue using the updated beta app 2015.14.0 where I can cast from Live TV channels but not from my Plex server.

I’ve got exactly this issue. The plex logo just shines there and nothing works or happens

Same here. Cannot start Plex on Chromecast. Just sits at the logo. Sometimes it gets past it, but I cannot play any of my media. WTF?

I have a similar problem. The Plex app on my Chromecast streams Plex TV, but doesn’t recognize my video server library. Both are on secure connections, I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled on both PC & CC, and tried everything else I could think of, and nothing works. I can’t even find a previous update to reinstall from that. And no response or acknowledgement of any questions I’ve asked in various forums.

Tested playing around with DNS. Set the Plex Server’s DNS Servers, and my phone, and my chromecast, all to Google’s public DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4). Can cast other people’s content, but not my own if using the Web App. Still cannot cast at all from the Plex App on my phone.

Are there logs I can upload or something to help figure this out? It’s becoming enough of a problem that I do not want to continue using it or pursuing this issue.

Hi.

I am having similar issue. On computer I can cast videos to chromecast. On phone (both android or apple) casting does not find devices. On iphone even button does not work. On other apps (netflix) cast bitton finds cohronecast.

I have had the same issue with the new Android app.

  • I am able to connect to the Chromecast
  • Hitting play on a TV show results in the TV jumping briefly through each episode and then back to the Plex logo
  • I can watch the video on the phone without casting
  • I can cast to the TV from a web browser on my computer

I was able to cast again by rolling back my Android app to the previous version 10.26

Android client version that doesn’t work: 2025.15.0
My device: Pixel 6
Android version: 15

I am also having the same problem casting to Nest Hub from iPhone

  • I am able to connect to the Nest Hub
  • Hitting play on a TV show results in the TV jumping briefly through each episode and then back to the Plex logo
  • I can watch the video on the phone without casting
  • I can cast to the TV from a web browser on my computer

Unfortunately, my TV Plex app is too laggy to watch, so we’ve been relying on Chromecast. Same issue casting to Chromecast, unblock Plex from my adblocker, and can connect, but stuck on Plex logo.
