Does it do anything Plezy can’t do? Other than being free for the most part. Cause downloading is like one of the main reasons I recommend Plezy for my friends that use my server remotely. So if it was free I would have immediately recommended.
None the less I love to see more flavors of third party plex clients
Hi, thanks for your question. We love Plezy, but the philosophy (FOSS aside, of course) is different.
Both can use ExoPlayer (on Android) - the difference is who does the work. In Plezy you pick the playback engine yourself and choose how it converts Dolby Vision Profile 7 files. Arnage switches engine automatically per file and device and handles Dolby Vision for you, there’s no backend setting and no DV conversion mode to get right. If you enjoy tuning mpv.conf, you’ll prefer Plezy. If you just want DoVi/HDR to play correctly on your Shield/Fire TV/phone with zero setup, that’s the point of Arnage. (Android, Android TV, iOS - no tvOS.)
To be as clear as possible: for a power user I’d probably recommend Plezy, where you can tune everything. For my grandmother, I’d recommend Arnage (OK, might be biased here), where we try to make it work with the best possible version of the display automatically. For example: a DV P7 file on an HDR-but-non-DV display, we strip the DV RPU automatically so the HDR metadata is used by the player. An HDR media on a non-HDR display, on Android we switch to mpv for local tonemapping. On iOS we always use mpv, and tonemap if needed when the HDR metadata can’t be shown.
One more thing: as you said, Plezy is free to build yourself, but downloading it from the stores has a one-time fee. Arnage is free on the stores, with most features free. The paid bits are just multi-server (a niche feature) and downloads.
