Artifacting when using hardware acceleration transcoding with integrated intel graphics

This should only be an issue with Intel igpu in windows. I added a spare gtx 750 ti that I had lying around and it worked fine. I’ll add a Turing video card as soon as the price inflation stops.

@elan is anyone looking into this considering its a paid for feature thats not working?

Nothing to say @elan? When you consider there is vulnerabilities in 1.17 that allow remote code execution its pretty piss poor that you ignore paying subscribers.

it’s filed internally.

Was that recently? If not, it would have been nice if somebody on the team would have at least communicated this sooner. We had previously tagged various employees on the team as to this issue w/ no answers or indication if this was even being looked at. Samples and logs were provided. Just felt like the issue was being swept under the rug.

sorry for the silence.

@elan Just to jump in and say I’m seeing this too. I used to have an AMD CPU with an Nvidia GPU but swapped Plex onto my i7-6700 with Win10 as I don’t use that anymore. Playing around with HW transcoding and Intel Quick Sync I see a lot artifacts, mainly in animation or fast-moving sequences. Watching the dashboard while transcoding the setting don’t match. It seems that the HW encode doesn’t change with set value in the player.

Glad to see there is a thread where this is being looked at

I’m definitely curious what’s going on this this one… I recently upgraded from an i3-4160 to an i3-10100 thinking it was an old-generation QSV thing (as I know 4th gens and below are really bad)… and oh my, it’s horrible with the 10100! I had no idea this was a bug… :frowning:

I think Plex should list known, pertinent bugs in its release notes (like what Nvidia and AMD do for their drivers). This bug would have influenced my decision of building an Intel instead of AMD system a month ago.

I had a little free time this weekend so I installed Emby and added a couple of TV shows. Using Quick Sync I could transcode down to 420kbps and while it wasn’t great it was still a million miles better than QS with the current Plex transcoder.

@richardap1 I just bought a lifetime plex pass too. I hope they fix it soon. It was literally the only reason why I bought it. Maybe I’ll set up an emby in the mean time for my users.

Same issue here - very frustrating indeed! I’ll be watching this thread hoping there is a resolution soon, although it’s already been about 8 months and no improvement :frowning:

No fix for this in 1.20.

any update on this @elan?

Yeah, @elan an update would be great, I only rebuilt my server two weeks ago and now I’m considering putting my Nvidia card back in and I really don’t want to do that.

I too just wanted weigh in on this as i recently got a new NUC to move my server to instead of it being on my NAS. all drivers updated to the latest via the intel website. Went to sit and watch a movie with friends and it was barely watchable. i had to turn off hw encoding.

Is the best fix so far downgrading to 1.17 and just using the bundles from 1.19? What issues does this cause?

Yes, at the current time only downgrading to 1.17 works. The issue is that you can’t use some of the new features like preview etc. No a nice workaround but the only one which does not make my NUC useless…

Yes @elan, an update would be highly appreciated! I do live with this annoying situation for months now and others too as this thread shows.

I just want to say that you charge us $119 per person, no matter how many unknown functions you promised to provide us in the future, but at least please stabilize the existing normal functions before starting the development of new functions.
we paid because we were satisfied with the running state of the software at the time, not for the previously so-called new features.

No matter how good the new function is, it can only be accepted when the current software runs stably. but you have not been able to maintain stable operation, and even regressed.

The most important function for pass users is hardware transcoding. now that it can’t be used. your official attitude is simply unacceptable. after such a long time, there is no solution at all. Instead, new versions are released one by one, with various claimed new features. , The claimed bug fix, turned a blind eye to this serious problem.

Why do you know that this kind of vicious bug exists but do not solve it? Are the nuc users of the windows service platform stupid or you guys stupid?

Please respect your profession and respect the paying users.

Any updates on this? I was trying to watch some TV remotely and due the connection had to transcode to 2mbps, it was terrible. So bad, I even tried to put an old Nvidia gtx 970 in to my server, only to find it was too big and the case had too many HDD in it :frowning:
