Plex Crashing When Users Transcode

Server Version#: 1.25.2.5319 and 1.25.0.5282
Player Version#: Unknown

So I updated to 1.25.2.5319 on the 16th then had issues with Plex crashing over and over throughout the day when users tried to transcode. I then downgraded to 1.25.0.5282 but still seem to have the issue.

Attached are logs. I’ve set up a kill script in Tautulli for now if someone transcodes to prevent further crashes while I investigate. Would it be worth downgrading to a 1.24 version maybe?

Your crash appears to be with hardware encoding not working properly. You can turn that off for now to avoid the crash. Not sure why it’s crashing. Have you restarted your computer recently?

I rebooted once after downgrading to 1.25.0.5282 then I ended up downgrading again to 1.24.5.5173 this morning and rebooted again to see if it makes any differences.

Before that reboot Windows Updates were last installed 11/9 so I don’t think those are related. I did just install more updates on the reboot after 1.24 though.

The system has an i5-1135G7 which supports QuickSync. If it’s still crashing at all after the 1.24 downgrade I’ll try disabling hardware transcoding for now.

Just to let you know that I had the same problem on Linux Mint with server 1.25.0.5282. Ended up reverting to 1.24.5.5173 and the problem went away. I guess I won’t try 1.25.2.5319.

I am seeing something similar. Running latest beta ( 1.25.2.5319) on Windows with Intel UHD 630 graphics. H/W transcoding no longer seems to work and PMS seems to stop responding quite often when it transcodes for a client.
I have turned off h/w transcoding to see if that helps.

I’m seeing the same. I’ve been seeing the same since using the beta version of this public release and now I’m stuck on it. Here are my logs.

This is is on a Debian host that has been rebooted. The issue still occurs.

Downgrading to 1.24.5.5173 seems to have fixed the issue for me. It’s been ~5 hours and I’ve had multiple people try playing things that crashed it before with no issue.

Hopefully Plex will look at this ASAP. I posted an issue here re problems with H/W transcoding on Windows in recent PMS releases (1.25+) and nobody even replied to it.
It can’t be coincidence that from PMS 1.25+ they had made significant changes to h/w transcoding within PMS according to the realease notes.

•	(Transcoder) Architectural changes to provide future support for hardware transcoding on additional NAS devices
•	(Transcoder) Architectural changes to provide improved support for remuxing some HDR formats
•	(Transcoder) Support for hardware transcoding of H.264 Constrained Baseline media
•	(Transcoder) Support for hardware transcoding on Intel Xe/Gen12 (TGL, RKL) GPUs
•	(Transcoder) Update to newer upstream ffmpeg

5173 works but unfortunately it looks like Plex took it off their download server. Docker Compose can no longer download it, so I’m stuck with broken releases.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of 5173, I am currently running 5319 and its crashing all the time.

What OS are you running Martyn? If it’s Windows I can upload the install somewhere for you.

I am running Windows 11, thanks

Do you happen to know if this is something that will be looked at? I’ve experienced this issue since this release was in beta and had to switch to the public version. Now that the public version is on 1.25.2.5319, I’ve had to revert back to 1.24.5.5173. We obviously can’t stay on this older version forever, so I’m hoping the next release will have it ironed out.

Yes, but unlikely not until after the holidays.

Any news or update on this issue?

I can confirm I’ve had to roll back to 1.24.5.5173 to have my transcodes actually work. I do not have h/w transcoding enabled. Any transcode on the latest plex just stops, the process doesn’t crash, I get a few minutes of playback until it just stops doing anything else.

@JustinHow and @evoactivity I think it’s fixed. I’m running the last version and it hasn’t crashed for a few days.

Sweet, I will try updating this weekend and do some testing.
