Asustor AS5302T Hardware encoding slower than software

Server Version#: 1.24.2.4973
Player Version#: 1.24.2.4973

Hello,

I have an Asustor AS5302T NAS, and I just made a subscription to Plex pass today to test the hardware encoding, but I have some trouble with it.

For a hevc/x265 1080p video, transcoding to x264 1080p is done at those speeds :
Software : 0.9 ~ 1.5 (with CPU at 40~50%)
Hardware : 0.3 ~ 0.5 (with CPU at 20~30%)

So, when hardware encoding is enabled, the CPU is less used, but the result is more buffering than real video. Is there some known limitation/problems with this NAS, or a special configuration to do ?

Thanks for your help

Your NAS sems compatible with hardware encoding.

Could you try to disable HDR tone mapping option? If I enable it on mine, videos are always buffering.

Hello,
Thanks for your help
I saw a thread about this (maybe it was yours) and I was full of hope, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem to change anything for me even with HDR tone turned off it is buffering

Here is my config page for transcoder :

Try changing the transcoder quality at the top over to Make My CPU Hurt in the dropdown. I don’t really do any transcoding on my server, but I remember seeing a video that said it can help with transcoder issues.

It doesn’t work either unfortunately. Even more illogic, it seems to be even a bit slower.

@Boulonais I see someone in the HDR problem thread advised you to use the docker version instead of the store one, did you test it ? And if yes, did it work ?

Its possible. I have a Qnap NAS so I can’t really speak to issues directly related to Asustor as I don’t have any real experience with them. I think that the docker version solves a very specific issue with HDR tone mapping not transcoding in general. You could try it anyway. It could also just be that the particular file you are trying to transcode is very difficult. I know that my system has to work pretty hard at first to transcode HEVC files and then it smooths out after a little bit. Honestly I would try to avoid transcoding as much as possible if you can. You’ll have much better luck direct playing if its feasible for you.

@Devid : no, I didn’t try yet. I wonder if it is hard to keep my data with the docker version. Currently, I miss free time to make tests.

Sorry for the long time without any news, I was quite busy.
I tried the docker version without any success, but I finally made it work, the “brutal” way, uninstall, move the Library folder to Library_old and reinstall.
Now everything work perfectly

Thank you all for your help and support !
