Transcoding on Asustor AS5304T

Hey there. I have a new NAS , and ran into some transcoding issues. HW accel turned on. Directplay works great, and transcoding anything that’s not 4k is fine - but transcoding 4k source is just unusable. After playing around with it further, I isolated it down to just HDR. With HDR turned off, I can run 4 streams and not hit 35% CPU. But with HDR mapping enabled, is where I hit the snag. Constant buffering… with about 2-3 seconds of playback, then buffering. If I pause, it plays well for a little bit then hits buffering again. I assume it’s filling up a send buffer during that pause-time. Is HDR mapping just a no-no? Unfortunately without HDR mapping enabled, its flat and dreary.

That’s in line with the info from the NAS compatibility list.
Your NAS/CPU can decode 2160p H.264 SDR (8bit MAIN, bt709 colorspace) and 4K HEVC (H.265) SDR videos and encode those as 1080p videos. It’s not powerful enough / doesn’t have the capability to decode HDR using hw-accelerated transcoding.

Well crud. Thanks for the the info.

Question - would optimizing a version be an option? Or will it just not decode it no matter how much time it has?

Optimizing could do the trick… it’ll just take an annoying lot of time if your CPU is weak. You might consider using another app like Handbrake on a more powerful device and subsequently upload the resulting file.

J4105 is capable of 1-2 tone mapped HDR streams. Try to install PMS via docker linuxserver.io that supports HW tone mapping and avoid burning in subs.

Yeah, to your point, I went back and looked at Intels Quick Sync matrix again, and Gemini Lake does support HVEC 10 bit. Not 12 bit, but 10 bit yes.

So… what’s the limitation I’m hitting exactly? Driver?

Hello,

I have a Lockerstor 4 (AS6604T) and I have to disable HDR tone mapping to stream 4K movies. Otherwise, I have the buffering problem every 3 seconds.
Is there a workaround? Are they some drivers/packages that we can install in order to fix the problem? I saw that some OpenCL/Beignet packages are required on Linux…

Docker

Sorry, I don’t understand You mean that I need to uninstall the store version and install the docker one?
Is there any guide to do that on Asustor NAS?

Yes, If you want to use HDR tone mapping
