ATI Radeon 5850 For Transcoding

I’m currently using Xeon X5670 CPU (6 cores / 12 threads) for transcoding. It works ok, but there’s a bit of a delay starting playback and when rewinding & fast forwarding.

I have an ATI Radeon 5850 1GB GPU laying around - would it be faster for transcoding then X5670 ?

It seems work on AMD support on Plex side should be starting now!

Plex does not support currently vaapi (standard Linux transcoding API), only proprietary Intel/NVIDIA.

Kindly do not make generalizations.

  1. Whether or not to include support for AMD was, as I previously stated, To Be Decided after the first of the year. No such commitment was made or otherwise implied.

  2. Plex does indeed support VA-API. Without VA-API, QSV would not be possible.
Yes, the transcoder is still clinging to the nVidia API. It is not known if or when using only VA-API for nVidia could happen.

  3. It has only been 3 days (including today) with the staff returning to the office. There is a lot of catching up being done at this time. I’m not making excuses but I will not allow unrealistic expectations and demands to go unchecked either.

Once again, the info is appreciated!

Good luck on the VA API support, I am sure I am speaking for many Plex users when I say that we are waiting for it with bated breath.

Frankly,

We’re all hoping and urging the project gets picked up.
There’s a lot of work but would be worth it in the end.

Thanks for replies. So it seems AMD transcoding is not supported - I didn’t know that. Will have to consider NVidia.

I’m very confused by answers here. I did some more searching and it seems plenty of people are HW transcoding just fine with AMD GPUs on Windows.

Here’s one post:

Can someone please clarify. Thanks.

Completely possible through windows if you use an amd card that can transcode in the codecs you require and can advertise that fact to windows for use through the dxva2 api (using the cards most up to date graphics card drivers with an up to date windows 10 install wont hurt, there may be a way to virtualise an install of windows and do pass through via vt-d or whatever tooling if you can work out the right concoction, but I wasn’t interested in virtualizing for this particular build and would recommend anyone inexperienced in hardware passthrough avoid this route period) then windows will know how to handle that type of media when Plex requests use from the media server

The discussion concerns Linux. YMMV with Windows.
