I have a plex server running off my FreeNAS box. Alternatively (and also to load balance) I’ve setup plex server on my Nvidia shield Pro (2019 edition).
The shield pro is connected to my home theater which is 7.2.2. There are 2 other TVs running plex. One is a Sony 4k android (built in OS) TV with a non atmos sound bar in the “living room” the other is a non smart 1080p TV with a Nvidia shield 2019 (non pro tube) running off TV speakers in the “bedroom”. I also have a roku 4k with plex installed which I use for “traveling” and using it at hotels I stay in. Generally these TVs vary from 720p to 1080p with a rare 4k in the room (quite typical).
Now I had ripped bluray and also have a few digital downloads of movies.
Now my question is, do I need to keep multiple tracks to not lose info while playing at any other TV than my home theater? Will Atmos tracks fed into sound bar/TV as a direct connection still give 100% of audio? I understand the sound will not be what I would get from an atmos theater, but will say SL data or F atmos left data be played by the left speaker of the soundbar or will it be omitted if I play as a direct stream (to keep my cpu usage under check). I also understand the L-C-R produce 85% of the sound in a typical atmos track and the SL/SR/SBL/SBR/FH/RH is generally effects, but sometimes that 15% element also holds some important effects (eg a murmur).
If plex detects that the device playing the Atmos cannot decode the atmos, plex will convert the audio to a compatible format, so in this regard, it would not give you the atmos sound experience. If plex detects that the device CAN decode the audio, it will hand over the audio track as a DirectPlay and let the device decode and play the audio, in this regard you will have atmos sound.
I hope that answers your question, your post was a bit difficult to follow.
Sorry, I guess typing on mobile is still not my thing. But yes. Thanks for the quick reply.
So I’m guessing it’s to do with the client, rather than the player?
eg shield 2019 (non pro) connected playing to TV speakers will get a direct TrueHD 7.1 stream and down convert it to (say) 2.0? Or will it send the same demand to server to transcode instead of direct play. At my home I have set stuff to direct play so that the cpu is used for remote connections only.
Since the sheild has an Atmos decoder in it, I believe it should send that and then whatever device (TV or whatever) will downmix it. But I cannot be certain, I don’t have a shield to test at the moment. If I was you, I would try hooking the shield up direct to one of your home TV’s and watching the behavior on the dashboard or via tautulli. Just to be certain that that’s how it will perform. But someone with a shield could also pop in and answer
I think for the shield to decode itself, it must have hdmi passthrough disabled and set to PCM (or something similar I forget).
I think then shield should direct play, even if the audio system is not compatible.

Yes it passes through perfectly for my 7.2.2 atmos. My question was related to non atmos systems playing atmos files
