The major networks just started broadcasting in ATSC3.0 a few weeks ago in the SF Bay area, so I bought an HD Homerun Flex 4K . I’m not subscribing to the Silicon Dust DVR/EPG service.
I did a channel scan, and Plex found all the channels included those >100 which are ATSC 3.0 . However, I am not able to add them to the channel list. When I click save, these channels don’t get added to the list.
Has anyone gotten ATSC 3.0 channels to work ? The 1.0 channels all seem to work fine.
Plex does not yet support ATSC 3.0 stations. This is primarily due to missing support for the AC-4 audio codec which is utilized by ATSC 3.0. As of right now, there is no way to use these stations with Plex’s Live TV & DVR feature. There’s a fairly active discussion in the thread linked below.
Also, when it does become supported, you will need to map your non-ATSC 3.0 equivalent channels to the ATSC 3.0 ones in the EPG configuration. For example, if you have ATSC 1.0 channel 4.1 and the ATSC 3.0 equivalent 104.1, you would assign 4.1’s guide to 104.1. This is due to the fact that the 1XX.X channels are constructs created by SiliconDust so that there wouldn’t be duplicate channels presented by the tuner.
Using the SiliconDust HDHomerun app on Windows 10/11, I had to purchase the HVEC Video Extensions app from the Microsoft Store to get video playback to work.
Would be willing to pay the small fee for whatever licensing cost might be slowing this down. For reference:
I would be willing to pay a one-time reasonable fee for a license to get the Dolby AC-4 codec. Or, maybe they should consider using an open source codec that isn’t designed to put anyone’s fingers in our pockets?
AC-4 has been the issue but won’t be the primary issue in the future. Many of the large owners of stations have started to encrypt all the standard channels. And they are the same ones pushing for the FTC to accelerate dropping 1.0. Plex doesn’t work with encrypted channels so what it looks like now is OTA on Plex may be eliminated entirely within the next few years.
Lon.TV started a petition that everyone should consider signing just to help add their voice to something that might get bit of attention. (not if you do, do not donate the $11 it suggests as that is just for petition.org, doesn’t have anything to do with Lon’s petition).
