I will look into creating a static build of FFmpeg when I get some free time.
This is what my stream profile selections look like:

This is what I see for that same dropdown of choices (finally figured out how to insert an image):

As you can see I have all of the same choices you have except for MPEG-TS Spawn/built-in. So my suspicion is that itâs a recent addition to Tvheadend. Your way might be better for those that have that option available, although I donât understand some of the options you are using with ffmpeg (probably because you are doing something different than anything I have ever tried to do) but if they work for you and you are happy with them then great. I do note that your way excludes the possibility of preserving any streams that are neither audio nor video (such as closed captions) but many people have no reason to preserve those anyway (also every version of ffmpeg I have ever used has been terrible at passing ATSC closed captions; I sometimes wonder if any of their developers are from the USA). Anyway, the method I showed would work with older versions of Tvheadend that donât have the MPEG-TS Spawn/built-in option.
I hope youâre successful at creating a static build of ffmpeg; it could provide a workable solution for many users!
P.S. I get the idea that you are trying to receive streams from various sources on the Internet, so I wonder if you have ever seen this thread on the Tvheadend forum. The program was originally intended to be used for bringing in Locast channels when they still existed, but they are long gone but the program has morphed into one that can be used to bring other types of streams into Tvheadend. You may not need a program such as that one to do that, but I just thought you might find that thread interesting if you hadnât seen it. I am not connected with it in any way and donât know the author, just thought it was interesting.
This is compiled on Ubuntu 20.04. You will have to install the packages listed in the apt-get command. It is not static but includes straight forward commands to get it compiled manually if the binary doesnât work. Literally copy and paste in the terminal. Assuming youâre using Ubuntu.
Well that looks a lot easier than any other instructions I have seen if it works, although the idea of installing a whole bunch of new packages doesnât thrill me. Still would be much better if a static build were available, if you ever find the time, and of course it doesnât help the people not using Ubuntu 20.04. But at least itâs a start.
I use CentOS but Iâm thinking most people here prolly use Ubuntu.
To get it static we need to use the --extra-ldexeflags=â-staticâ directive but it requires a whole lot of manual compilation of the dependencies instead of just installing the packages via apt. It can be done but is time consuming but if somebody could test this out first then we can proceed with something more sophisticated.
Iâm not sure if any channels on my antenna have moved over to AC-4. Might check that out in a few days.
EDIT: I was able to manually convert an AC-4 sample file to AC-3 via command line using this FFmpeg bin so it does work. The original file doesnât play audio in VLC and after conversion it does. Iâm farily confident integrating this into TVheadend and directing it to transcode the audio will work.
Any progress on getting audio working for ATSC 3.0? Legal / technical issues, what is the status of both? BTW I am very impressed with the improvements Plex has made on the DVR, but this ATSC 3.0 audio thing is very important, keep in mind, many Plex users are early adopters , somebody buying HD Homerun Flex 4k is in for a big disappoint if they are a Plex subscriber.
yep update please
I donât have any further news on the technical or legal process that I can share at this time.
thatâs disappointing
Well in the meantime I guess I can try Channels DVR server and along with Apple TV. Channels DVR can play and record the audio for ATSC 3.0 full quality. I saw Apple TV streamers are on sale now, which Amazon is sending my way. (no support for Roku) Channels DVR service is like $8 /month or $80 for a year.
If you manage to set up TVheadend with your tuner itâs possible to use the AC4 FFmpeg bin to transcode the audio on-the-fly and pipe everything to Plex.
Another vote for getting this working soon.
Iâve learned to hate the HDHomeRun app more and more.
The latest is their forced channel rescans every 3 days or so adding unusable channels. You are not able to opt out.
The fact that it is completely unusable during an internet outage ie weather emergency is a big deal to me. This also applies to any recordings. I purchased a internal HDD that goes completely unused.
Not publishing a changelog bugs me. "Here, update your firmware. We arenât saying what it does.
Of course, use what you like best.
Posted on their website.
Good luck,
Chris
TBF, there had always seemed like only one employee was behind all the app development, or at least that was a unproven theory at the time. It was excruciating when I donated towards their app development only to have the UI and bare minimum be presented. It took forever. It seems like not much has changed.
Thanks. This had to have been put up today.
I agree, but think it goes deeper than that when it comes to requiring a live internet connection so that it can phone home. This is supposedly so the EPG can stay updated. Why would EPG updates need to be near continuous? Why does the EPG need updates when Iâm watching recordings?
Iâm afraid to do any firmware updates. Other software works now.
Iâm done with it. More options available.
If you see an unusable channel you can block it by clicking on the star until it turns into an X. That will keep it from being used.
Thatâs true. I can go in and band-aid the mistake their software made. Then do it again, then again next time. When there really isnât really a reason to background scan for changes at all. But they force it to happen.
I wanted to get in my 3 cents worth.
I needed to replace an aging HDHomeRun tuner and when I saw that my local NBC, CBS and ABC affiliates were all broadcasting their ATSC 3.0 signal from a single tower that is about 10 miles from my house (for context, my ABC affiliateâs main tower is about 60 miles away, behind mountains; my CBS affiliateâs tower appears to disappear behind trees in the spring)., I bought the HDFX-4K.
First, I tried the HDHomeRun app and it wanted me to install HEVC software (that wouldnât install on my PC), so I went straight to Plex and started watching video from a channel Iâve never gotten OTA. âBut whereâs the sound,â I thought?
Yes, I read this thread months and months ago, back before local ATSC 3.0 was a thing, but I forgot about it. But then I remembered. But then I thought SURELY, in ALL THIS TIME, theyâve worked this out.
Sigh. Channels DVR is looking better all the time for this. Maybe Plex shouldnât have sold us lifetime passes so that theyâll do things so we keep paying them so theyâll have people to do stuff.
Maybe Plex needs to join LGâs lawsuit for FRAND licensing of AC4.
