Just because it’s in ffmpeg doesn’t mean we can use it. There are several things in ffmpeg that would require licensing, legally speaking. Us licensing codecs is nothing to do with the free movies and TV, and has existed long before we offered those. Decoding, or transcoding, codecs that require a license, means that we need a license. Any codec that we decode we either have a license for, or is royalty free. Things definitely aren’t grey, and if you ask companies that own and developed these codecs, they’d either say you need a license, or you can’t do it, regardless of who is doing it.
Thank you for your responses Dave. Why not limit decoding atsc3 signals to a company that has codecs now, like Silicondust & use their codec? Or give us an option to buy the codec, like microsoft does for 99c?
That all still involves legal and licensing deals, and we can’t legally do that
Bumping the post for an update. Fox13 Local has now moved to ATSC 3.0 only so no local fox anymore. Hoping for sound with plex on atsc 3.0
What market?
You might want to re-scan channels or otherwise check your equipment.
The FCC has specific requirements before a broadcaster can shutdown their ATSC 1.0 signals, such as maintaining both signals for five years, public on-air announcements, and receiving FCC approval before ending ATSC 1.0 broadcasts.
Birmingham went live today with ATSC 3.0. Please add channels:
106.1 WBRC
113.1 WVTM
117.1 CW
117.2 ABC3340
121.1 CW
133.1 H & I
142.1 WIAT
168.2 ABC3340
Thanks
I second FordGuy61’s reply - no way any broadcaster/station has fulfilled the requirements to stop transmitting their ATSC 1.0 signal. It just hasn’t been long enough. Please chime in here when you figure out what’s going on!
No broadcaster in the US is legally allowed to stop broadcasting ATSC 1.0 yet.
I’ll have to recheck but that’s the first thing I did, had been gone for a good week. Had rescanned a few times, 100% not there. If legally has to be there then maybe just went down for a bit
Hmm, maybe you all can help me. I understand that ATSC 3.0 support isn’t fully there, but I can’t even get my DVR to enable the ATSC channels. Have an HDHomeRun Flex 4K, can see (and watch/listen to them with the HDHR app) 5 local ATSC 3.0 channels with no problem. I actually see them in my Plex DVR Channel Mapping list, but any time I select them and try to map the relevant HD channel EPG to them and hit save, nothing happens… If I select them and don’t map an EPG channel it just refreshes the guide data, but the channel isn’t selected.
It’s my understanding that Plex DVR and Live TV doesn’t support ATSC yet. I use HD HomeRun.
So, is there anything we can do to request that ATSC 3.0 support be more of a priority?
Posting here is about all that can be done.
I’m also looking for support of audio for ATSC3.0 broadcasts. I recently purchased an HDHomerun Flex 4K only to realize that audio doesn’t work in Plex. Please add support for nextgentv!
Any updates on getting full audio support for ATSC 3.0? I know forums and reviews of ATSC 3.0 tuners are deterring a lot of folks from subscribing to Plex. I just bought a HDHomerun Flex 4K and found out the limitations of ATSC 3.0 channels lacking AC-4 support. It is disappointing and frustrating as even having the hardware ability, i’m still stuck on ATSC 1.0 due to Plex’s s/w limitations.
This needs to be at the top of the list for Plex to resolve. All I’ve read is “lawyers are working on it”. do they get paid by the hour? Maybe the Lawyers need to provide an update on the roadblock.
Since Roon implemented Roon ARC and I also installed Emby. I finally decided to shutdown Plex. It has been almost 4 weeks and I do not miss it. All the Plex TV stations are recycled content and nowhere near anything premium. Roon’s interface is elegant and intuitive. It is also great for people who like the highest quality music to be streamed. Plex’s interface and features are way behind. So now I will look to see if I can salvage some of my “shiny life-time pass” funds somehow. Plex really missed the boat. Not just on ATSC 3.0 but many other features. This just happened to be the last straw. As I said in my previous post, the only answer is to leave.
Same here… I am a Lifetime member of Plex and Emby… In hindsight my money was wasted on PLEX and no ATSC 3 support and don’t get me started on the mobile picture backup fascio… Which both items work perfectly in Emby…
Emby supports ATSC 3 support?
I am watching an ATSC 3 OTA channel with sound right now…
Yes. Also I found out Emby’s Live TV functionality is under a compete rewrite, which if released, will blow Plex’s offering out of the water. The ETA on when that will be released has not been made public, but from the looks of their feature/progress list (openly available in a thread over there), it’s nearly finished.
