I would like to emphasize this point. Of course I would like Plex to hurry up and support ATSC 3. But this is an excellent point. Why was this approved with a proprietary format, and no older codec support? Reading about the differences between the sound formats (old and new) The new one is really minimal improvement, so why do it??
regulatory capture
So it would seemā¦
Thank you, very much looking forward to ATSC 3.0 audio support, hoping this is a high priority for Plex, love the product!
Yes, definitely following this as I would love to use Plex as my main TV viewing experience instead of switching to Emby to watch.
Let make this happen. A lot have worked on, and pushed for ATSC 3.0. So now that its rolling out lets thank all for there hard work by using it. Plex we need you to do your part!. ATSC 3.0 has been in the works for yearsā¦Lets go. Formats change all the time you wont be able to keep up if it takes you over a year to work out a bussines deal and implament it.
If they had worked harder perhaps they wouldnāt have used a closed source, proprietary, sound codec.
Who exactly shouldāve worked harder? If youāre referring to Plex, they had nothing to do with what codecs would be used in ATSC 3.0.
Read the thread. ATSC3.0 Broadcast and AC-4 Sound - #123 by jebrossard
Count me in as someone who hopes this gets implemented in the not too distant future! One quick question, though: Is there any workaround for recording where we can choose to keep the AC-4 audio in the output file, or is that not possible?
As far as I can tell it looks like most everyone else has the code and the license. All the Stations are fine, they just have to wait on frequancies from the FCC, HDHome run has the code and license, oither medea servers have it, So why is PLEX the only one having a hard time?
So, someone said Emby supports ATSC 3.0 and the AC-4 sound, is this true? I have been a long time PLEX user/supporter, but itās been almost 2 years and PLEX still canāt get a license so that tells me they are not going to.
Iām also looking for this feature, actually this shouldnāt be a feature as ATSC 3.0 is rolling out, itās basic functionality.
Throwing my hat in the ring here. Iām a Plex Pass Subscriber and would absolutely like full ATSC3 support as I have broadcasters in my area using it. Iām not interested in switching to a different platform as I have Plex Server setup for rmovies and TV already and donāt want to have to hunt around for different apps dependent on what channel or content I want to watch.
Please Plex devs, can we prioritize this? Youāre going to have to integrate it sooner or later just do it now and get it over with before people start jumping ship to other competing productsā¦

i was curious so i tried out emby. in current form you have to use the beta version of the server which requires a paid subscription. ATSC 3 channels do work but the the audio is transcoded to 2 channel stereo on all my devices including a 2019 shield tv pro.
Interesting. Thanks for the info!
It would be awesome to have a monthly update on this thread from Plex. Please consider
FYI, the latest Channels HD (Version 5.1.1) is playing the ATSC3 stations with sound fine now. Iāve got so much stuff in my Plex library for movies and tv that I am dreading moving to another platform. I just donāt understand why Plex canāt get this done. ChannelsHD is an ongoing subscription cost for the DVR, but Emby has a lifetime option like Plex. Not sure which way to go. Channels really seems to have its stuff together.
Hopefully they get things worked out at some point. For me, here in the DC area, there really is no advantage for me to record from the five ATSC 3.0 stations here. Since the quality is basically the same as their ATSC 1.0 counterparts. So I just record from those ATSC 1.0 stations for now.
Agreed. The only benefit for me would be the fact that the content isnāt interlaced. At this point, that benefit isnāt enough of a draw for me to purchase a new HD HomeRun with two 3.0 turners.
With that being said, I would still love to see support for 3.0 sooner than later.
