The Verge is saying Android TV launches in a few days. IMO, Apple needs to up its game and soon with an Apple TV 4, new GUI I/F, and new app store or its lead is going to get stolen.
Can someone elaborate, if PMS would need any less transcoding for MKVs etc when playing content through FireTv Plex app compared to Plexconnect on Atv3?
Not sure, this is all I could find on media types:
https://developer.amazon.com/sdk/asb/media-specs.html
Found a nice little page that xbmc has now on the fire tv:

And some plex:

Ars Technica doesn’t like it much.

Ya I don’t like that it doesn’t have a voice search feature for non amazon content but I for one won’t be using it for anything but:
Plex and xbmc as well as some showtime anytime and hbogo.
I could care less about any paid services on any box such as aTV, google tv, fire tv, or roku to name a few. I’m looking for a fast cheap media player that can run xbmc and plex mainly. Done.
Nothing will beat a HTPC ever be it a PC/MAC/LINUX box but they also come with a price tag.
Plex and xbmc as well as some showtime anytime and hbogo.
Do you already have the box? All the videos I see have XBMC buried away under some weird menus. Is it possible to bring it up to the main window with the Plex or Netflix application?
I plan on ordering it soon. I have a few other things on order I’m waiting on first if and when they arrive I plan on getting one. I’m not sure about bringing them out of those hidden menus. I’m just looking at the videos as you are.

Did you get the box? Did you figure out how to place XBMC on the main screen?
I did buy it. I did not figure out a way to put xbmc on the main screen but it works just fine by going thru the application settings menu to open it up. Works perfectly from my testing so far.
Looks like you can load it at boot now:Did you get the box? Did you figure out how to place XBMC on the main screen?

Thanks to @jdillinger he found a nice link as well for other apps that you can sideload that they seem to keep updating:

There is a more efficient way to get APKs.
1) Use this website to help download APKs: http://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/
2) Go to google play store and search for the APP you want (try to get tablet forms of the apps if possible)
3) Right click on the APPs name and choose "Copy Link Address" (I use Chrome so it may be different for you)
4) Go back to the site mentioned in step one and paste link into field box.
5) Click generate download link and enjoy.
I'm assuming if you're trying to sideload apps that you have the necessary software to ADB Connect to your fireTV. With that said, APKs should be placed in the SDK/Platform-Tools folder of said software. Good luck and have fun!
