Audio drop/stutter True HD Atmos 7.1 on Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) using Plex

Server Version#: 1.25.2.5319 on Synology DS920+
Player Version#: 1.25.1.5286 on Shield TV Pro (2019)
TV: Samsung 65N95A (E-ARC audio passthrough to soundbar)
SB: Samung HW-Q950S

Hello all

I’ve been doing some searching and testing already but cannot get this issue fixed
When playing MKV files with TRUE HD Atmos 7.1 audio I get sound drop/stutter or the soundbar does not recognize the Atmos for a second or 2 …

This happens with almost any file that I’ve tried so far.
From reading and testing I learned the following

  • Issue only occurs when using Plex. No issues when playing the same files in VLC or Kodi
In all cases the soundbar does show that the audio is Dolby Atmos. Only Plex has issues with
    playing it
  • I’ve set Plex to passthrough (and Kodi / VLC as well)
  • I’ve set Plex to Refresh Rate Switching On/Off. Both failed
  • I’ve set the Shield Dolby processing On/Off. Both failed, but Kodi / VLC still had no issues
  • I have no issues with Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos (E-AC3 + Atmos) in Plex
  • I have no issues when using the Plex TV app and sound gets downsampled to Dolby Digital (Plus)

After all testing I think that the problem lies with the Plex for Android app used on the Shield TV.
If the problem would be the TV, soundbar or NAS I would have issues with Kodi / VLC as well.
But unfortunately Plex is the only one failing in the playback.

As a big Plex fan I would of course like to play the True HD files from Plex as well and not have to revert to Kodi / VLC each time I play a MKV with True HD Atmos 7.1 audio

Movies I’ve tested include:

  • Ford v Ferrari
  • Pacific Rim
  • Pacific Rim Uprising
  • Dune
  • The Last Duel

Anyone who has a idea how this issue can be resolved?
Or do I have to wait for Plex to address this issue in the app?

Please let me know if additional info is helpfull that might leed to a solution.

Kindest regards
Richard

Sadly a common issue on the client side. I’m currently using a custom Kodi version as a workaround.

alternative work around.

client app version 8.19.4

It has its own small issues but works very well.
I have the Shield Pro 2019 with an Onkyo TX-RZ-610 and have full 7.1

Do you happen to have a link to that version maybe?
What kind of issues does it have?
And any idea why isn’t the TrueHD issues not fixed if it was working?
Cheers

I don’t have a link to that older version, sorry.

I thought most folks would keep the older app copies around like they also keep older PMS copies around. (I do)

I don’t know why but when everyone is back from the holidday, I’ll ask.

I will share, I don’t have any TrueHD issues into my receiver. This will be difficult for me to test / identify for engineering if I can’t reproduce.

This is probably going to need your app log files , capturing the TrueHD failure, to give to the Engineering team (this is the most reliable method)

Thanks for the follow up.
As I only have this setup for 2 weeks I do not have older versions.
This is the setup after taking the equipment out of the box and do the initial install.

Please let me know if there is an apk available tahtbi can test or how I can provide the logs required for troubleshooting.

I really like the Plex setup and would love to be able to include the TrueHD support as well so I do not have to use VLC or Kodi

Cheers.
