Dolby Atmos playback issues with Nvidia Shield player (audio out of sync)

Nvidia Shield player. Nvidia Shield does not play Dolby Atmos properly loses sync with audio and video An audio disappears totally Works no problem with All my other media players only Plex will not play Dolby Atmos files properly I used to be able to switch to the Exoplayer And it wouldn’t solve problems when the new player didn’t work But now that option is taken away if you cannot fix the problem please return that option I just don’t understand why All the other players example VLC Kodi MX Player Pro Vimu Player All play Dolby Atmos with no problem on Nvidia Shield Cannot understand why Plex Cannot get this to work ? Please fix As I hate to have paid for something that doesn’t work Especially when free apps work with no problem !

Confirmed, same issue on Nvidia Shield 2017 as well, and it is with every Atmos track. If I use Plex app installed on my Sony TV…no audio dropouts. So it’s definitely the Plex app on the Shield.

This has been going on for quite some time… months, reported by many but Plex assistance doesn’t make time for Plex on Shield TV concerns. Seems that they just lump it in with Android TV issues, but this is it’s own Plex Media Player on the Shield TV issue. Other streaming devices, seem to take priority.

The Atmos audio “dropouts” are a big issue, and we would like some assistance please!! The Android TV beta they dropped for the 7.1 audio issues w/ mkv files, didn’t fix anything for Shield 7.1 /Atmos audio dropouts. Also EAC3 audio isn’t being decoded properly, sometimes it plays as stereo and not Dolby.

Flagged it , hopefully a Mod can help us out or escalate our concerns to a Dev.

Yes I have every version Of The Shield from the older pro To the new pro version and the tube version and none of them will play with Plex player properly when it comes to Dolby Atmos. They should at least give us the option to select an external player until they can get it right. As I mentioned in my previous post they all passthrough Dolby Atmos with no problem I can not understand why they can’t get it to work. Maybe you’re right there spending too much time on other devices but does not make sense to me because the Nvidia Shield is the top media player out there you would think it would have priority over a TV set?!

Mod messaged me, said they are looking into it.

Good to hear!

I have 2 shields and haven’t had any audio issues.

The tube does have issue with high bit rate 4K remuxes but that is a well known issue.

None of the posts in this thread provides much info or details for the devs or anyone to give much help, Help us help you - how to provide logs to get your problems identified and hopefully resolved

Try playing the Blu-ray The Expendables 3 mkv It’ll be fine until you get to 4 minutes. After 4 minutes all hell breaks loose Let me know where you want the logs to be sent but if you can get past 4 minutes without any issues I would be amazed I would say you will be able to look at your own logs to see what the problem is ! As I stated I have 4 NVIDIA SHIELDs 1 original pro model 1 2017 pro and with the new chip 1 pro and one with the tube Which I regret buying the tube But still plays flawlessly With Kodi VLC and a few of the other Players only Plex will crash! Thanks for finally replying

Any update from them?

are either of you using the shield as SERVER and client at same time ?

in the dino-s logs, I see this, it looks like a network error of some sort, but is unclear why.

this error seems to be your internet gateway/modem/whatever does not like/support upnp/SSDP, while I would not expect to affect truehd/atmos, there seems to be a ton of these errors in the log.

My Nvidia Shield has Plex server enabled but I am calling the file from my Netgear readynas server. All video seemed to work fine except for Dolby Atmos I verified one more time to play using VLC without any glitches. I have noticed many times when I go to play a movie that it tries to encode and of course I get the error saying that the Nas is not powerful enough to transcode even though my server is set to max for local network. This used to never happen when the wording was different example no transcoding I believe it used to say which I preferred because when I see the word maximum doesn’t necessarily mean no transcoding. I do not know what all the errors are all about as I have an Asus GT - 5300 which is powerful router and I am using gigabit connections throughout my home and would like to stress again that I have no trouble playing any 4K videos with other software only Plex especially when Dolby Atmos is within the video. Obviously either the Plex server or Plex client is that fault.

I just heard back from him but they don’t seem to really know what’s wrong they’re seeing a lot of server errors but shouldn’t have nothing to do with the Atmos and I replied back to the moderator on the forum.

Hmmm…

I would suggest a couple things;

make sure that both tv and AVR are set for hdmi 2.0 mode

try new/different hdmi cables that are known good for 2.0 + 4k/hdr/dolby vision/dolby atmos.

not all cables are the same, some tv/avr are configured for hdmi 1.4 by default.

desyncs at specific points, to me, means either;

  1. a bad/damaged rip/encode
  2. some kind of limit is being exceeded, be it network bandwidth (probably not likely), hdmi bandwidth, or AVR limitation.

Thanks for the reply! First I like to state all my cables are certified for 18 gigabit a second I have multiple Atmos systems throughout the house they all have the same issue. Third and most important issue I thought that it may be a bad rip and did multiple rips from multiple computers with different drives but as I stated the same file plays flawlessly with other media
players example VLC, kodi, vimu and MxPlayer with the same hardware.

In the past when the issue would happen, because it does not always happen with every atmos file I would switch to the built-in exoplayer and not use new Plex player and it would solve the problem but we do not have that option anymore. I know it’s your job to go to the obvious issues as you don’t know who I am or my knowledge I would like to mention I’ve been dealing with electronics for 40 years and I also repair my own electronics so I am not a novice, when I report a problem you can sure bet it is legit as I would have looked at all possibilities before reporting an issue. Last I like to mention it is well documented on other forums that’s this so-called stuttering is an issue with Plex so in the meantime may I make a suggestion and give us an option again to use external players until Plex can solve the issue please and thank you, it will save us end users a lot of headaches. This issue is becoming so frustrating and going nowhere fast it is just making me take a hard look at purchasing a Zappiti Pro sooner than later.

I rolled back to Plex v8.11, no more audio dropouts.
Thank you for taking the time to help us out.
