I would also really love to see audio passthrough in the new Plex App to enjoy Dolby Atmos and DTS-x content.
But i am also enjoying the TV-Mode feature in combination with my HTPC, so i also don’t want to miss out on TV Mode.

You will want to stick with Plex Media Player then.
+1 . . . I completely echo this sentiment! It is absolutely ludicrous to think that an Nvidia Shield is even close to the same quality and performance of my 2080 Super with another $1500 worth of hardware. Yet you handicap the performance by not providing pass-through audio??? A capability that currently exists in software that is in the process of being deprecated. :S :S :S :S :S
Just use Plex Media Player like everyone else that needs audio pass-through, etc.
@darcilicious PMP is in the process of being mothballed and removed from service . . . The disclaimer even says so when you install the latest update. (A change by the way which wasn’t in the change-log)
The question remains . . . Why isn’t this functionality in the new Plex for Windows???
Because it hasn’t been implemented yet.
Clearly there is no answer that will appease you. Try and have a nice day anyhow.
@darcilicious The problem is there is no clear concise communication to say that it will ever be implemented. The correct answer would be halt the deprecation of PMP Desktop Layout and put PFW into beta until the existing core functionality has been migrated over in a working fashion.
Btw I am having a great day . . . I do have a life outside the internet and the internet doesn’t dictate my day at all.
@darcilicious please stop with the unhelpful dismissive replies, it’s thoroughly unprofessional.
If a Plex employee can’t be bothered to swing by and confirm that this critical feature is in development for the new app and the old app will not be depreciated (or gimped into TV-mode only) until that is completed we’re right in keeping the pitchforks out.
No news about this?! Realy sad about not being able to use passthough.
The news is:
Use Plex Media Player if you need passthrough:
Use Plex for W(hatever) if you don’t.
“If you want a full-featured media player, download the right one idiots. You’ll have to find it, because we don’t make it available on the download page and do our best to hide it from you because we really don’t want to put in the work to support it.”
So glad I waited to pay for Plex Pass. From what I’ve seen of the support around here, it’s not worth one penny.
The new Plex for Windows Plex-1.9.0.1188-c009e512-x86_64 is now working with pass through for me through USB! I’ve tried it up to 24-bit `92khz and all is great! Thank you very much Plex!
Yep, 1.9.x has audio device configuration. It’s currently going through our internal QA, but due to my error building the app, it also was available for download from our website by Plex Pass holders. I’ve since removed the download.
The version mentioned by myki88 has a pretty harsh bug that will cause immediate issues for many users. The links below addresses this bug specifically. I’m sharing this early because a) the 1.9.x cat is out of the bag b) the cat will bite.
1.9.0.1198-0c1b003f (last update Apr 24, 2020)
Known issues (1.9.0.1198-0c1b003f)
Multi-Channel Audio Boost setting only applies to PMS transcoded audioExclusive Audio is required to bypass the system mixer. We’re seeing Windows overrule audio configurations unless this setting is enabled.I’ll stay around this thread for feedback/input.
Hi, I’m very pleased that you are working on this. The Audio Configuration options are there now but ticking them makes no difference to what is output to my Denon Atmos Receiver from my Desktop Ryzen 7 2700x PC with Geforce 1050Ti running Windows 10. I still get Multi Channel PCM instead of Atmos etc. Plex on my Nvidia Shield TV passes through Audio Correctly to my receiver and so does Kodi on my Desktop PC.
@peter-d-w This sounds similar to an issue we’re debugging. Would you mind deleting Plex.log (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex\Logs) while the app is shut down then starting the app and trying that test again? The MPV wsapi logs it’ll generate will be super helpful.
Just a quick update to share that we’ve identified some additional issues. I recommend waiting till the next beta update to hop on.
Would you still like me to try your suggestion above?
Hi @peter-d-w thanks for asking! Yes please.
I’ve updated the post above with links to 1.9.0.1198-0c1b003f. This revision fixes problems handling the selection of passthrough codecs and the channel layout. Please check out the known issues, particularly the exclusive audio requirement.
Before testing it would be good to delete the deviceSettings= line in your %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex\plex.ini. This clears out audio device configuration as well as some other settings like auto login.
Thanks a lot for being involved.
Hi, Revised version passes through audio correctly to my receiver. Thank you. The 2nd film I tried to play said ‘The video failed to play. Playback failed to start on time’ . Same film plays fine using Plex on Nvidia Shield TV. Log is too long to copy and paste into this message. would you like it emailed?
Regards,
Peter
Hehe, nope! You had me at “passes through audio correctly”.
Thank you very much @peter-d-w!
