Audio stutter when listening via Bluetooth in Tesla

When listening to music on my phone (OnePlus 10 Pro - Android 14) via Bluetooth in my car (Tesla MY 2023) with either the Plexamp or the Plex app, the audio stutters about every half a second. In some rare cases the music plays fine.

This is what I already tried:

  • Unpair and pair my phone to the car multiple times, had succes one time.
  • Switch between AAudio and OpenSL ES in the Plexamp app, no success.
  • Reboot the car OS, no success.
  • Change every Bluetooth codec related setting in the developer settings in multiple combinations, no success.
  • Reinstall my phone OS, no success.
  • Play some music from Spotify, YouTube and TuneIn, the music plays fine without stuttering.
  • An iPhone with the Plex and Plexamp apps, the music plays fine.

I’m curious if there is something else I could try and if someone experienced the same?

Server Version#: 1.40.2.8395
Plexamp app Version#: 4.10.1
Plex app Version#: 10.14.0.541

Hmm, unfortunately I’m not sure what to recommend here. You could try posting logs after it stutters for a bit, but I suspect the issue is somehow interwoven between android, bluetooth and the Tesla.

FWIW, I use iOS + Tesla M3 w/o issues, and others use Android + Bluetooth fine, so it’s just unclear what the difference here is…would be interesting to hear if anyone else has issues, I also suspect (just based on prior history) that using e.g. a Pixel wouldn’t have issues.

Thanks for your response! I have gathered the logs from Plexamp and I noticed a lot of lines that I think indicate the stutter. Unfortunately it’s not clear to me what the cause could be.

I gathered the logs from the normal Plex app as well. The messages are basically the same:

Is it possible to change the buffer delay in the app(s)?

Out of curiousity I also installed Jellyfin and that works fine too. So only the Plex apps seem to have trouble playing music over Bluetooth to the car.

Today I installed Tesla software version 2024.20.1 and I noticed that Bluetooth audio processing has much less delay now, playing and skipping songs almost instantly. That was certainly not the case before, taking about a second to notice the action (playing, pausing, skipping, etc.) in any app.

The Plex apps also play fine now and I do not see any mixer underflowed warnings in the debug logs anymore.

The delay problem was definitely in the Tesla software, but I also think that other apps could handle the delay better than the Plex apps. There is room for improvement there, but I understand that the urgency depends on how many similar cases of delay in bluetooth audio processing people experience daily (very likely not many :))

Keeping my fingers crossed, and so far I think we can safely say that the problem is solved for me.
