Hi,
Having realised that different devices are still really picky about formats (e.g. ROKU struggles with files that built in TV Plex apps happily play), I have finally found a good compromise profile using Handbrake to create m4v files for those movies that I may only come back to occasionally and which seem to work on all the devices we have via Plex.
However as far as audio tracks go, what’s the difference between using (for example) AC3 5.1 passthru and downmixing to AC3 5.1 from say Dolby True HD? Presumably if there is already a 5.1 option available on a disc, all downmixing has been taken care of and it’s just easier to pass this through rather than getting Handbrake to do the downmixing to re-create the 5.1 soundtrack?
Also the specs for ROKU state that it supports DTS Passthru but does also support AC3 5.1. Surely if it supports AC3 5.1, using passthru in Handbrake just means I don’t have to re-encode any audio or does using passthru result in a different type of outputted file?
Essentially all I need is AC3 5.1 & AAC Stereo options for the files I am intending to create and am trying to work out the best way to create the most compatible files with the least bother!
Many thanks
