This has been going on since the beginning of time, so it’s not a new bug… Is there a way to make Plex transcode audio to AC3 instead of AAC? For example, I have a file with EAC3 5.1 and the Roku box + TV uses the TV speakers, so stereo only. Plex always transcodes the audio down to AAC 2.0, but since Roku’s generally prefer AC3, I’d rather use that instead. Is there a way to choose the pecking order if a client supports both. Yeah, Roku’s technically support AAC, but AC3 is better. I believe this to be a universal truth to everyone using a Roku, so it’s not just me.
The only time I want my Roku’s to use AAC 2.0 is if the video already has that, otherwise, let me get AC3 instead please.
No, you can’t specify what the audio transcodes to. Curious why you prefer ac3? Since your tv can only do stereo, there is no advantage over aac. You’re just sending extra info that gets ignored.
Yeah, but if your tv doesn’t support ac3, the Roku has to do work to covert it. If it receives what the tv supports, it can just pass that along. I’m not seeing the advantage of sending ac3 to the Roku.
Every modern TV for over 15 years supports AC3.
What’s the point though? Transcoding to AAC vs. AC-3 (for 2.0) results in no additional loss in fidelity. Every Roku device ever made supports AAC (and can natively decode it).
What benefit to you hope to gain by Plex transcoding to AC-3 vs. AAC? Are you having any specific audio problems?
