Audio Video Sync

over the past few weeks i have been getting more and more audio video sync issues. I have seen the behavior from the shield and from the plex for windows client. sometimes stopping the show entirely and resuming fixes it (sometimes not). sometimes it occurs after i skip intro. sometimes it just starts occurring in the middle of a show.

This used to happen to me occasionally and stopping and starting the show or playing something else then going back to the show fixed it but now its happening everyday. its not a particular show. its not the video itself (i dont think).

given i have seen the behaviour for years just less freuently i figured it was just some sync glitches that occurs between the server and player. now that it is happening much more often i want to understand what it could be so that i can more easily solve the problem when it happens.

is it just the player. or could server be getting corrupt and its just getting worse. or what could be the items i could look into on it.

while it happens often its not a straightforward reproducible event. same laptop, same video, one play back it’ll not be in sync then i can play it again and it’ll be in sync.

another note, this used to happen much more often on my windows player which is an older laptop and hardly ever on my shield. now it still happens more on the windows player but its also happen more frequently on my shield. from once a month to several times a week.

I’m seeing the same behavior as well - it’s super frustrating. I actually bought a Shield because I thought the Roku was being flaky - still running into the issues, regardless of the client.

Getting this issue on a Roku Ultra… lips move and the subtiles are good but sound is a bit behind. Not sure the exact version it worked fine on but currently running 1.31.1.6733, may have to roll back until it is no long present and set a host file entry so the plex server looks at itself for updates :)… are the releases being tested before release???

I had this issue on NVidia Shield, the resolution here on the Shield itself. On the Shield go to Settings > Device Preferences > Display & Sound > Advanced Sound Settings

  • Match content audio resolution: (Preserve audio bit depth and sampling rate over HDMI )

Turn it off.

It appears that Shield resamples audio on the fly so would likely cause a sync issue. If there is anything similar on other devices, maybe worth checking out

will try it out next time i have an issue on the shield. it seems more to do with my other older laptop.
