[RESOLVED] Auto Resolution Switching on Android TV / Nvidia Shield TV

Hello,

Automatic resolution changing for the SHIELD TV Plex client would be a real useful and helpful feature. Kodi already fully implements it and it’s working great.
Missing auto-resolution support is the only thing that keeps me from using Plex.
Kodi, MrMc and Emby are supporting this feature. I can’t understand why Plex - as the preinstalled solution on the Nvidia Shield TV - seems to be the last media library app without auto-resolution?

Thx a lot.

One of the upcoming SHIELD Experience versions (7.2.x) will support color space switching as well (Rec. 709 <-> Rec. 2020) which is supposed to fix a lot of color problems some TVs have.

I’m not sure if this requires the resolution switching feature to be implemented by the player as well in order to be effective.
Just in case this feature does get selected for implementation it sure is worth checking if we can get this feature for free or with a very small effort.

Yes they’ve implanted auto color switching. But no auto resolution switching…

Just voted for this feature request. It would be an awesome addition to the nVidia Shield Plex app since its one of the only streaming players out there that doesn’t support this yet (like Kodi and SPMC). I watch alot of 4K content from Netflix, Amazon Prime etc so I need to leave the Shield output to 4K 59.9. And most of my Plex content is 720 or 1080 so the upscaling that the Shield performs is not always ideal.

This feature would be an awesome addition in a future update Plex!!

I want to leave my Nvidia Shield at 4k resolution and still be able to output my plex 1080p movies as 1080p! not upscaled 4k! I want my projector to do that!

Voted. Hope this happens in the ear future.

Voted! Just picked up a Sony 900F which has amazing upscaling. Right now I have to change the resolution setting on my shield each time I change from a 4K title to a 1080P and back. I would ditch the shield but it is faster than the built in AndroidTv and the built in can’t support TrueHD sound. I would LOVE one source/solution that does it all!

I do not understand only 24 voted, very useful feature for best picture settings example for high end projectors with 4k enhancement

I voted, but it didnt count it.

I am not needing this real fast, as I am still on a 1080p TV, but my plans are to upgrade to 4k TV.

Until then I will be fine with 720p upscaling may be not as nice as with kodi.

I don’t get it either. Resolution switching would be a useful feature for all platforms not just Android TV. Since there’re already working implementations (Kodi for example) this shouldn’t be too hard to implement anyways.

This is needed big time!!! I hate keep switching as my tv does way better upconversion than the shield does on Plex. Any word on this one day coming?

It will be so usefull, even mandatory.

I feel like the Shield is way down on the list of priorities for Plex. Kodi has supported this for ages. This really needs to happen, I love plex but in the end, for me, image quality will win over the convenience of using plex.

This is a must, the built in scaler seems to suffer from some visual artifacts and using another player doesn’t offer the same level of integration.

Added my vote, as well. This really is a must have feature!

At least Kodi and MrMC allow resolution switching. Would much prefer using plex on my shield and allow my Sony 900f and Lg C8 to do the upscaling work. Another vote for resolution switching.

I don’t understand why the Shield’s preinstalled media solution app doesn’t support this feature
Most of the other apps are already switching the resolution automatically.

Does Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and YouTube all do auto resolution even when in 4k mode so the tv does the upscaling?

Here’s to hoping this happens sooner rather than later!

Sadly not. With “other apps” I meant Kodi, MrMc and Emby.
